Introduction

Paraphrase the increase in life expectancy. State that negatives outweigh positives.

It is true that global life expectancy has increased significantly, resulting in a demographic shift toward an older population. Although there are some advantages of this trend, I would argue that there are far stronger disadvantages for society as a whole.

Body 1 · View 1

Discuss positives: 1. Wisdom and mentorship. 2. Voluntary work and childcare.

The main positive aspect of this development is the wealth of experience and wisdom that elderly individuals contribute to their communities. Older people often serve as mentors and provide invaluable support in intergenerational knowledge transfer, which enriches the social fabric. Furthermore, many retired citizens contribute significantly to the voluntary sector and provide essential childcare. By looking after grandchildren, they enable younger parents to remain in the workforce, which provides an indirect economic benefit. However, these social contributions are often overshadowed by the immense logistical challenges posed by an ageing populace.

Body 2 · View 2

Discuss negatives: 1. Strain on healthcare/geriatric services. 2. Economic risks of a shrinking workforce and pension costs.

Despite the advantages mentioned above, I believe that this trend is a negative development for two reasons. Firstly, an ageing population places an enormous strain on public healthcare systems and geriatric services. As the elderly are more prone to chronic illnesses, governments must allocate disproportionate resources to medical care, which can lead to funding shortages in other sectors. Secondly, there is a serious economic concern regarding a shrinking workforce and a rising dependency ratio. With fewer young people working and paying taxes to support a larger number of retirees, the sustainability of pension schemes and national economies is put at risk.

Conclusion

Summarize that the economic and healthcare challenges are more significant than the social benefits of an older population.

In conclusion, while I recognize the benefits of elderly wisdom and childcare support, I consider it to be a negative development overall because of the massive pressure on healthcare and the economic threat to the tax base.
