The bar chart illustrates the reasons for travel of various individuals who were surveyed at a large urban airport during four distinct months of 2002.
Overall, it is clear that the main reason for travel was business, followed by vacation. However, the number of people traveling for these purposes fluctuated throughout the year. The least common reason for travel was visiting friends or relatives.
In January, the number of business travelers was highest at around 220, and this figure remained fairly stable in April and July, but dropped to just over 180 in October. Meanwhile, the number of people traveling for vacation peaked in July at approximately 200, which was significantly higher than in the other three months, when the figures ranged from around 80 to 120.
The number of people visiting friends or relatives was consistently low throughout the year, with the figure hovering around 50. Interestingly, there was a slight increase in this category in October, when the number of business travelers decreased. This could suggest a shift in travel purpose during this month.
