The overall trend indicates a steady increase in visits to and from the UK over the period, with France being the most popular destination for UK residents. The number of visits by UK residents to overseas countries also showed a significant rise.
From 1979 to 1999, the number of visits by UK residents to overseas countries increased dramatically from just over 10 million to nearly 60 million. Similarly, the number of visits to the UK by overseas residents also rose significantly, from less than 10 million in 1979 to about 30 million in 1999.
France was the most popular country for UK residents to visit, with over 11 million visits, followed by Spain, with just under 9 million. The USA was the third most visited country, with around 4 million visits, while Greece and Turkey were less popular, attracting approximately 3 and 2 million visits respectively.
