The bar chart illustrates the various techniques of waste management employed in four different metropolitan areas: Toronto, Madrid, Kuala Lumpur and Amman.
At first glance, it is clear that recycling is the most common method in Toronto and Madrid, while landfill is the preferred choice in Kuala Lumpur and Amman. Additionally, incineration is the least utilized technique across all four cities.
Looking more closely at Toronto and Madrid, both cities demonstrate a strong preference for recycling, with Toronto leading at approximately 45% and Madrid following closely at 40%. Incineration is the least popular in these cities, with Toronto using it for just over 10% of its waste and Madrid even less at around 5%. On the other hand, the use of landfill is moderate in these cities, with both under 30%.
In contrast, Kuala Lumpur and Amman primarily rely on landfill for waste disposal, with percentages hovering around 60% and 75% respectively. Recycling is used minimally, with Kuala Lumpur at about 10% and Amman barely reaching 5%. Similarly to Toronto and Madrid, incineration is the least favored method, with both cities using it for less than 20% of their waste.
