Part 1 · Interview

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.

Introduction · Q1

Can you tell me your full name?

Introduction · Q2

Where are you from?

Introduction · Q3

Do you work or are you a student?

Concentration · Q1

Did you always pay attention in your lessons at school? [why/why not?

?] To be honest, I can't say I always paid attention in my lessons at school. I think it's pretty normal for students to get a bit distracted or disinterested in certain subjects, especially if they're not particularly engaging or relevant to their interests. That being said, I did try my best to focus and absorb as much information as possible, especially when it came to exams or important assignments.

Concentration · Q2

Do you find it easy to concentrate when you are in a noisy place? [why/why not?

?] It can be a bit of a challenge for me to concentrate in a noisy place, especially if there are a lot of distractions or interruptions. I think it's just human nature to get a bit distracted by outside stimuli, and it can be hard to stay focused on a task when there are a lot of other things going on around you. That being said, I do try my best to find a quiet and distraction-free space to work or study in whenever possible.

Concentration · Q3

When is it particularly important for you to concentrate? [why?

?] There are a few different situations when it's particularly important for me to concentrate. For example, when I'm working on an important project or presentation, I need to be fully focused and engaged in order to deliver the best possible results. Similarly, when I'm studying for an exam or trying to learn something new, I need to be able to concentrate in order to absorb and retain the information. In these cases, my ability to concentrate directly impacts my success and achievements, so it's really important for me to focus and give my full attention to the task at hand.

Concentration · Q4

What do you do to help yourself concentrate better? [why/why not?

?] There are a few things I do to help myself concentrate better. For one, I try to eliminate as many distractions as possible. This might mean turning off my phone, finding a quiet and comfortable workspace, or even just closing my eyes and taking a few deep breaths to clear my mind. I also try to set specific goals and priorities for each task, as this helps me stay focused and motivated. Finally, I try to take breaks and move around a bit, as this can help energize me and improve my overall concentration and productivity.

Do you have breakfast at home everyday?

I try to have breakfast at home every day. It's a great way to start the day off on the right foot and get some fuel in your system before tackling the day's tasks.

Cooking and Housework · Q4

Do you want to learn how to cook well?

In my city of Mumbai, one of the most special events that take place annually is the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. This festival is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the elephant-headed god of wisdom and prosperity in Hinduism. It typically occurs in the months of August or September, based on the Hindu lunar calendar, and lasts for ten days. During this time, the city comes alive with vibrant decorations, music, dance, and a sense of community spirit that is truly infectious.

When does it take place

The participation in the Ganesh Chaturthi festival is widespread and inclusive. People from all walks of life, regardless of age, religion, or social status, come together to celebrate this event. The festival involves elaborate idol preparations, processions through the streets with music and dance performances, and culminates in the immersion of the idols in water bodies like the sea or lakes. The atmosphere is filled with devotion, joy, and a sense of unity as everyone joins in the festivities.

Part 3 · Discussion

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.

Discussion · Q1

How do special events in different cities show their cultural identities?

Special events in various cities are fantastic windows into their unique cultural identities. For instance, a city like Rio de Janeiro showcases its vibrant spirit through the world-famous Carnival, which is a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and elaborate costumes, highlighting the city’s rich Afro-Brazilian heritage. Similarly, cities like Kyoto, with its stunning cherry blossom festivals, reveal a deep appreciation for nature and tradition that is central to Japanese culture. These events not only bring communities together but also attract tourists, providing a platform for cultural exchange and education. Ultimately, they serve as a reminder of the diverse tapestry of human experiences and the ways in which tradition and modernity can coexist.

Discussion · Q2

Some people think that planning special events wastes resources, while others believe they are important for getting the community involved. What do you think?

I can completely understand both perspectives, but I lean towards the idea that organizing special events is incredibly valuable for community engagement. These events often serve as a catalyst for social interaction, bringing people together and fostering a sense of belonging. They can also boost the local economy by attracting visitors and supporting local businesses. Additionally, special events often highlight cultural diversity, allowing communities to celebrate their unique heritage, which is essential in today’s globalized world. Overall, while there are costs involved, the long-term benefits to community cohesion and spirit far outweigh them.

Discussion · Q3

How important are special events in helping city residents feel like they belong?

Special events play a crucial role in fostering a sense of belonging among residents of a city. They provide a unique opportunity for community members to come together, share experiences, and celebrate their shared identity. For instance, festivals and parades can create an atmosphere of excitement and inclusivity, allowing people from different backgrounds to connect over common interests. Moreover, these events often showcase local talent and culture, which not only enhances community pride but also strengthens social ties. Ultimately, when residents feel engaged and included, it cultivates a more cohesive and vibrant community spirit.

Discussion · Q4

What makes people want to join in or go to special events in their neighborhoods?

People are often drawn to participate in or attend special events in their communities for a variety of reasons. Firstly, these events provide a fantastic opportunity for social interaction. In our increasingly busy lives, they allow individuals to connect with their neighbors and forge new friendships, creating a sense of belonging. Additionally, special events often showcase local culture and talent, which can foster a deep appreciation for one's community. Finally, the excitement and vibrant atmosphere of these gatherings can be incredibly uplifting, providing a much-needed break from the routine of daily life. Overall, they serve as a celebration of community spirit that many people find irresistible.

Discussion · Q5

How might a city change if there were fewer special events over time?

If the number of special events in a city were to decrease over time, I think we would witness a significant decline in the city's cultural vibrancy. Special events like festivals, concerts, and exhibitions often bring people together, creating a strong sense of community and fostering social cohesion. Without these events, the city could become less attractive to both residents and tourists, which might lead to a downturn in the local economy as fewer visitors spend money on dining, shopping, and entertainment. Furthermore, the absence of such gatherings could create a more monotonous atmosphere, making it hard for the arts and local talent to thrive. Ultimately, a decrease in special events could strip the city of its unique character and charm, making it feel less alive and engaging.

Discussion · Q6

What steps can be taken to get local communities more involved in special events?

To enhance the participation of local communities in special events, a multifaceted approach can be really effective. First and foremost, engaging community leaders and influencers in the planning stages can help tailor events to meet local interests and needs. Additionally, offering incentives, such as free tickets or exclusive access to activities, can encourage more people to join in. Furthermore, using social media and local platforms to promote these events can significantly increase visibility and excitement. Lastly, incorporating elements that highlight the community’s unique culture and heritage will not only draw attendance but also foster a sense of pride and ownership among residents.
