Speaking test #092
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like insects?
Personally, I have a bit of a mixed opinion when it comes to insects. Some of them, like butterflies and ladybugs, are quite beautiful and fascinating to observe, but others, like cockroaches and mosquitoes, can be quite unpleasant and even dangerous. So, I suppose you could say that it depends on the specific type of insect in question.
Do you think insects are useful?
Definitely! Insects play an incredibly important role in many ecosystems and are vital for pollination, pest control, and even as a food source for other animals. For example, bees are responsible for pollinating a large percentage of the fruits, vegetables, and nuts that we eat. Without insects, our world would be a very different and less diverse place.
What kinds of insects make some people scared?
I think it's safe to say that most people have a bit of a phobia when it comes to certain types of insects, like spiders, for example. Other insects that can make people feel uneasy include cockroaches, beetles, and even some species of ants. These insects are often seen as dirty or creepy and can evoke feelings of disgust or fear in some people.
Are there many different insects in the place where you live?
Yes, there are quite a few different types of insects where I live. We have everything from the common house fly to various types of butterflies and moths. There are also quite a few types of beetles and ants, as well as some interesting types of praying mantises and other types of bugs. It's quite fascinating to see the diversity of insects that can be found in even just one small area.
How often do you go online?
I go online almost every day, usually for several hours at a time. I find it to be an essential tool for staying connected with my friends and family, as well as for work and research.
What do you use the internet for?
I use the internet for a variety of purposes. I use it for communication, such as sending emails and chatting with friends and family. I also use it for work, researching and collaborating with colleagues on projects. Additionally, I use it for entertainment, such as streaming movies and music, and browsing social media.
What's your favourite website?
My favourite website would have to be YouTube. I love the variety of content it offers, from educational videos to music and comedy. It's a great way to discover new things and I always find myself spending hours on it.
Do you think children should be allowed unsupervised access to the internet?
I believe that children should have some level of supervision when using the internet. While the internet can be a valuable tool for learning and communication, it can also be a dangerous place if children are not properly educated on how to stay safe online. Parents should set guidelines and monitor their children's internet usage to ensure they are not exposed to inappropriate content or online predators.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Location of the village or suburban area
I once had the opportunity to visit a picturesque village called Cherrapunji, located in the northeastern state of Meghalaya, India. Nestled amidst the rolling hills of the Khasi Hills, Cherrapunji is renowned for being one of the wettest places on earth due to its high rainfall levels.
Main features of the village or suburban area
The main features of Cherrapunji include lush green landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. The village is dotted with traditional Khasi huts made of bamboo and thatch, adding to its rustic charm. The living root bridges, a unique natural wonder created by the local tribes using the roots of trees, are also a prominent feature of this village.

How do country areas differ from city areas in lifestyle and community relationships?
Rural areas and urban settings are quite distinct in terms of lifestyle and community interactions, which is fascinating to consider. In rural communities, life tends to be more close-knit, where everyone knows each other and social interactions are often more personal and meaningful. People in these areas often engage in traditional practices and community events, which fosters a strong sense of belonging. On the other hand, urban settings are characterized by a more fast-paced lifestyle, where individuals may prioritize career and personal ambitions over community ties. This can lead to a more superficial form of interaction, as people may be surrounded by many but feel isolated. Ultimately, both environments offer unique advantages and challenges, shaping the way people connect with one another.
How much do you think living in a village is better than living in a city?
Living in a village can offer a myriad of benefits that often surpass those found in urban settings. For instance, villages typically boast a stronger sense of community, where people are more connected and supportive of one another, creating a close-knit atmosphere. Furthermore, the pace of life is generally slower, allowing residents to enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, which can significantly reduce stress levels. Additionally, the natural surroundings in villages provide opportunities for outdoor activities and a healthier environment, which are increasingly valued in today’s fast-paced world. However, it's essential to recognize that while villages have their advantages, cities offer greater access to amenities and job opportunities, making the choice highly subjective depending on individual preferences.
How important do you think nature is for the quality of life in suburban areas?
I believe the role of nature in the quality of life in suburban areas is absolutely paramount. Suburban environments often provide a unique blend of urban convenience and rural tranquility, which can greatly enhance residents' well-being. Access to green spaces, parks, and natural landscapes not only encourages outdoor activities but also fosters a sense of community and connection among neighbors. Additionally, being surrounded by nature has been shown to reduce stress and improve mental health, allowing people to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Overall, I think the presence of nature in suburban areas is a vital aspect that contributes to a fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
Why do some people like the calm of a village more than the busy life of a city?
Many people are drawn to the tranquility of village life because it offers a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of urban environments. In a village, the pace of life tends to be slower, allowing individuals to savor their surroundings and enjoy a sense of community that is often lacking in cities. The natural beauty and fresh air can also contribute to a more relaxed lifestyle, which can be incredibly appealing for those seeking to escape the stress of city living. Moreover, the close-knit relationships formed in smaller communities can foster a sense of belonging that many find comforting. Ultimately, it's about personal preference; some people thrive in the excitement of a city, while others find their peace in the serene atmosphere of a village.
How could suburban areas change in the future due to urbanization trends?
The future of suburban areas is likely to undergo significant transformation as urbanization trends continue to evolve. One major change could be the increased integration of technology, making these areas more connected and convenient for residents. For instance, we might see the rise of smart homes and sustainable infrastructure that promotes energy efficiency. Additionally, there could be a shift in demographics, with more young professionals moving to the suburbs in search of affordable housing, which could lead to a vibrant mix of cultures and ideas. Overall, I believe that suburban areas will become increasingly dynamic, blending the tranquility of suburban life with the amenities typically found in urban centers.
What steps can be taken to improve life in rural areas?
To enhance the living conditions in rural communities, several measures can be implemented. Firstly, improving infrastructure development is crucial; this includes better roads, access to clean water, and reliable electricity, which can significantly uplift the quality of life. Additionally, promoting affordable healthcare services is essential, as many rural areas often lack proper medical facilities, leading to health disparities. Moreover, investing in educational opportunities can empower residents, providing them with the skills needed to thrive in a changing economy. Lastly, fostering community engagement through local initiatives can help residents voice their needs and collaborate on solutions, creating a more vibrant and sustainable rural environment. Overall, a holistic approach that combines these elements would undoubtedly transform rural living conditions into something much more desirable.
