Speaking test #106
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Does your name have any special meaning?
My name, Nguyen, is a very common surname in Vietnam and it means "the one who goes first." I feel proud to have this name as it symbolizes leadership and being a pioneer in my culture.
How would you choose names for your next generation?
I would choose names that have special meanings and are meaningful to our family. For example, I would consider names that have been passed down from previous generations or names that have a significant meaning in our culture. I would also consider names that have a positive connotation and are easy to pronounce.
Are there any differences between how Vietnamese people name their children now and in the past?
Yes, there are definitely differences between how Vietnamese people name their children now and in the past. In the past, names were often chosen based on traditional customs and beliefs, such as choosing a name that had a good meaning or was associated with a specific deity. Nowadays, parents are more likely to choose names that are more modern and fashionable, and may not have as much significance as traditional names.
Does anyone in your family have the same name as you?
Yes, actually many of my family members have the same name as me. My father, grandfather, and uncles all have the same surname, Nguyen. However, my given name is unique to me and my immediate family. It is a tradition in Vietnamese culture to have the same surname within the family.
What do you do when you feel bored?
When I feel bored, I like to engage in activities that challenge my mind or keep me physically active. This could be anything from reading a book or solving a puzzle, to going for a run or hitting the gym. I find that engaging in these kinds of activities helps to alleviate boredom and keep me mentally and physically stimulated.
What kind of things are boring to you?
To be honest, I don't really find many things boring. I tend to be a very curious and adventurous person, so I enjoy exploring new things and trying out new experiences. However, I will say that I do find it boring when I am forced to do something that doesn't interest me or that feels repetitive and monotonous.
Whom do you think get bored more easily, the young or the old?
I think this really depends on the individual. Some young people may be more easily bored because they are still exploring and discovering what interests them, while others may be more engaged and curious about the world around them. On the other hand, some older individuals may be more prone to boredom because they have already experienced a lot of what life has to offer and may feel like they have less to discover. Ultimately, I think it comes down to the individual's personality and interests.
Do you think school is boring?
Again, this really depends on the individual and their perspective. Some people may find school boring because they struggle with certain subjects or feel like they are not being challenged enough. Others may find school exciting and engaging because they are learning new things and engaging with their peers. Personally, I found school to be a mix of both - there were certainly moments when I found it boring, but overall I enjoyed the learning process and the social interactions I had with my classmates.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

How can different cultures or societies admire certain qualities in different ways?
That's a fascinating question! The admiration of specific qualities can vary significantly across different cultures due to historical, social, and economic contexts. For instance, in many Western societies, qualities such as individualism and self-expression are highly valued, often seen as marks of success and creativity. In contrast, some Eastern cultures may place a greater emphasis on collectivism and harmony, appreciating traits like humility and community spirit. This divergence highlights how deeply cultural values can shape our perceptions of what is admirable, leading to a rich tapestry of ideals around the world. Ultimately, embracing these differences can foster greater understanding and appreciation among diverse societies.
How important do you think it is for people to have good qualities?
I believe it is absolutely crucial for individuals to possess admirable qualities, especially in today's world where interpersonal relationships and social dynamics play such a significant role. Qualities like empathy, integrity, and resilience not only enhance personal character but also contribute to a more harmonious society. When people embody these traits, they inspire others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of positivity and support. Moreover, in professional settings, possessing admirable qualities is often linked to effective leadership and teamwork, which are essential for achieving common goals. Ultimately, these qualities enrich our lives and foster a sense of community, making them indispensable in both personal and societal contexts.
How do good qualities help in achieving success in life and work?
Having admirable qualities is absolutely pivotal in both personal and professional success. Traits like integrity, resilience, and empathy not only foster strong relationships but also build trust among colleagues and friends. For instance, when you show genuine empathy towards others, it creates a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued, leading to enhanced teamwork. In the professional realm, qualities like determination and adaptability can significantly elevate one's career trajectory, as they enable individuals to navigate challenges and seize opportunities. Ultimately, possessing such qualities not only shapes our character but also influences how others perceive and interact with us, paving the way for meaningful connections and achievements.
Why do you think some people are attracted to certain traits in others?
I believe individuals are often drawn to specific qualities in others because these traits resonate with their personal values and experiences. For instance, someone who values honesty might be particularly attracted to people who exhibit that same quality. Additionally, we often seek out traits that complement our own personalities or fill gaps we perceive in ourselves. This can create a sense of balance and harmony in relationships, making them more fulfilling. Ultimately, it’s fascinating how these preferences can shape our connections and friendships, reflecting not just who we are, but also who we aspire to be!
How could views on good qualities change in the future?
The perception of admirable qualities is likely to evolve significantly as society changes. For instance, qualities like empathy and adaptability have become increasingly valued in our fast-paced world, especially with the rise of remote work and digital communication. In the future, I think we might see a greater appreciation for qualities related to sustainability and innovation, as global challenges like climate change demand that individuals not only think creatively but also act responsibly. Additionally, as technology continues to advance, traits like tech-savviness and collaboration may also become more prominent in our definitions of what it means to be admirable. Overall, the qualities we hold in high regard will likely reflect the pressing needs and values of society at any given time.
What can people do to develop better qualities in themselves?
Cultivating admirable qualities is a rewarding journey, and there are several steps individuals can take to foster personal growth. Firstly, engaging in self-reflection is crucial; taking time to evaluate one’s thoughts and actions can lead to a greater understanding of personal strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, seeking constructive feedback from friends and family can provide valuable insights and help identify areas for improvement. Another effective approach is to set specific goals, whether it’s developing empathy by volunteering or enhancing resilience through challenging experiences. Lastly, surrounding oneself with positive influences, such as mentors or like-minded individuals, can inspire and motivate one to embody those admirable qualities consistently. Overall, it’s a continuous process, but the rewards are certainly worth the effort!
