Speaking test #159
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like changes? Why?
I'd say I'm generally a fan of change. I think it keeps things interesting and helps us grow and learn new things. Plus, I'm the type of person who gets a little restless when things stay the same for too long.
What have been some changes in your living area/ city recently?
There have been a few notable changes in my city recently. For one, there's been a lot of construction going on. They're building a new shopping mall, and there are several new apartment buildings going up as well. It's definitely changing the skyline a bit. Additionally, there have been some changes to the public transportation system. They've added a few new bus routes and extended the hours of operation for the subway.
Have you changed a lot since your childhood?
Definitely. I think we all change a lot as we grow and experience new things. When I was a kid, I was pretty shy and introverted. I've definitely come out of my shell more as I've gotten older, and I'm much more confident and outgoing now. I've also learned a lot and developed new interests and hobbies.
What do you plan to change next year?
I'm not sure specifically what changes I'll make next year, but I'm always looking for ways to improve and grow. Personally, I'd like to work on my physical fitness and maybe pick up a new hobby or two. As far as my career goes, I'm always looking for new opportunities and ways to advance. So, I'm sure there will be some changes there as well.
What is your most vivid childhood memory?
My most vivid childhood memory is definitely the time my family took a trip to Disney World. I remember feeling so excited and overwhelmed by all the sights and sounds. It was such a magical experience that has stayed with me to this day.
Are you still in touch with your childhood friends?
Yes, I am still in touch with a few of my childhood friends. We've managed to stay connected despite the distance and time that has passed. It's always great to catch up with them and reminisce about old times.
What was your favourite toy when you were a child?
Oh man, that's a tough one. I had so many favourite toys when I was a child. But if I had to choose just one, I would say my favourite toy was my stuffed animal collection. I had so many different ones and I loved cuddling up with them at night.
Is it important for children to have fun? Why?
Absolutely. I think it's extremely important for children to have fun and enjoy their childhood. Play and laughter are crucial for their physical, mental, and emotional development. It helps to build their self-esteem, creativity, and social skills, and provides a much-needed break from the stresses of daily life. Plus, it's just plain good for the soul!
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How does help from friends and family compare to help from professionals in tough times?
That's a fascinating question! The support we receive from friends and family often comes from a place of genuine empathy and deep emotional connection. They know our histories, our personalities, and can provide comfort in ways that professionals might not be able to. For instance, a family member might share personal anecdotes or offer a shoulder to cry on, which can be incredibly reassuring during tough times. On the other hand, professionals bring a different kind of support, often grounded in expertise and objective analysis. They can provide strategies that are backed by research and experience, which can be immensely beneficial in navigating complex situations. While friends and family might offer unconditional love, professionals can guide us with practical solutions tailored to our specific challenges. Ultimately, both forms of support are invaluable, each complementing the other in our journey through difficulties.
How might people have different feelings about getting help from others?
People’s feelings about receiving help can vary widely based on their cultural background, personal experiences, and even their current emotional state. For instance, some individuals might embrace assistance with open arms, viewing it as a form of social support that fosters connection and builds relationships. On the other hand, there are those who may feel a sense of vulnerability or embarrassment when accepting help, perceiving it as a sign of weakness. Additionally, the context matters; in a professional setting, someone might appreciate help as a way to enhance collaboration, while in personal situations, they might feel more conflicted. Ultimately, it's fascinating how these perceptions can shape our interactions and influence our willingness to both give and receive help.
How can help from others lead to personal growth and improvement?
Assistance from others can play a pivotal role in personal growth and development in several ways. For one, having a strong support system can help individuals overcome challenges that might seem insurmountable on their own. When people share their experiences and insights, it can lead to a greater understanding of oneself and foster a sense of self-awareness. Additionally, mentorship or guidance can introduce new perspectives and skills that propel one’s personal and professional life forward. Ultimately, collaboration and support not only enhance our abilities but also nurture resilience, which is crucial for navigating life's ups and downs.
Why do you think many people struggle to ask for help when they need it?
Many individuals struggle to ask for help due to a variety of reasons, primarily rooted in social anxiety and perceived vulnerability. People often fear that seeking assistance might make them appear weak or incompetent, which can be especially pronounced in competitive environments. Additionally, there’s a cultural aspect at play; in many societies, there's a strong emphasis on self-reliance and independence, leading individuals to believe they should manage their problems alone. This can create a sense of isolation, where they feel they should be able to cope without support, even when it's clear that everyone needs help at times. Ultimately, it’s a shame because asking for help can foster deeper connections and provide invaluable support.
What might happen in society if people were more open to giving and receiving help from each other?
If people became more willing to offer and accept help from one another, I believe we would witness a significant shift in societal dynamics. For starters, social cohesion would likely strengthen, fostering a greater sense of community. Individuals would feel more supported, which could lead to a decrease in feelings of isolation and anxiety. Additionally, this culture of mutual assistance could spark a wave of collaborative initiatives, driving innovation and problem-solving as people pool their resources and skills. Ultimately, a society that embraces helping one another would not only enhance individual well-being but also cultivate a more empathetic and resilient community overall.
What can communities do to encourage helping each other among their members?
To foster a culture of mutual assistance, communities can implement several effective strategies. First and foremost, organizing regular community events, like neighborhood potlucks or volunteer days, can bring people together and strengthen social ties. These gatherings not only encourage interaction but also create a sense of belonging, which is crucial for fostering a supportive atmosphere. Additionally, establishing community support networks, such as buddy systems or mentorship programs, can help individuals feel more connected and encouraged to reach out for help when needed. Lastly, promoting local initiatives that celebrate acts of kindness, perhaps through social media campaigns or recognition events, can inspire others to participate and contribute to a more collaborative environment. By taking these steps, communities can truly cultivate a spirit of mutual assistance that benefits everyone involved.
