Speaking test #189
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you often use a bag?
Oh absolutely, I use a bag pretty much every day. It's such a convenient way to carry all my essentials around, whether it's for work, running errands, or even just a quick trip to the store.
What types of bag do you like?
I have a bit of a thing for backpacks, to be honest. I love the versatility and comfort of a good backpack, and they're just so practical for everyday use. That being said, I also really appreciate a nice tote bag or shoulder bag for more formal occasions.
Do you have different bags for different occasions?
Definitely. I have a few different backpacks that I use for different purposes - one for work, one for the gym, and one for travel. And then I have a couple of different tote bags and shoulder bags that I use for more formal occasions, like meetings or events.
What kind of bags would you like to own in the future?
I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting bags to add to my collection. Currently, I'm really into the idea of a nice messenger bag - something stylish but still practical for everyday use. I'm also considering investing in a high-quality leather briefcase for more professional settings. Ultimately, I just love bags that are functional and stylish, and that can adapt to a variety of different situations.
Do you live in a house or an apartment?
I live in a house. It's a spacious three-bedroom home with a large garden and a garage. I love the feeling of having my own private space, and the garden is a real bonus for me.
Which is your favourite room in your home? Why?
My favourite room in my home is my living room. It's a cozy and comfortable space that is perfect for relaxing and entertaining. I love the natural light that floods in through the large windows, and the fireplace adds a warm and inviting touch. Plus, the view of the garden is just beautiful.
Would you change anything about your home? Why / why not?
I wouldn't change anything major about my home as I am very content with it the way it is. However, I would love to have a bigger kitchen as I love to cook and entertain. But overall, I am very happy with my home and don't feel the need to change anything.
Would you like to move to a different home in the future?
I am currently very content with my current home, but I can't rule out the possibility of moving in the future. I would consider it if the opportunity arises for a better location or a larger space. But for now, I am very happy where I am.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How can the importance of a painting change in different cultures?
The significance of a painting can vary dramatically between different cultures, as art often serves as a reflection of societal values and historical contexts. For instance, a painting that celebrates nature might be revered in cultures that have a strong connection to the environment, while in others, it might be seen merely as decorative. Additionally, certain colors and symbols can carry profound meanings that differ based on cultural backgrounds; for example, while white often symbolizes purity in Western cultures, it may be associated with mourning in some Eastern traditions. This diversity in interpretation not only enriches our understanding of art but also highlights the incredible tapestry of human experience. Ultimately, the beauty of art lies in its ability to transcend boundaries and foster dialogue among different cultures.
Why do some people have different feelings about modern art than classical art?
People often have varied opinions about modern art compared to classical art for a multitude of reasons. Firstly, classical art typically represents a shared cultural heritage, with its meticulous attention to detail and historical significance, which many find comforting and familiar. In contrast, modern art often challenges conventional norms and can be seen as more abstract and subjective. This can lead to a sense of confusion or even frustration for those who prefer the clarity of traditional forms. Additionally, modern art often reflects contemporary issues and personal experiences, which can resonate differently with individuals based on their own backgrounds and values. Ultimately, these differing perspectives can lead to a rich tapestry of opinions about what constitutes "art."
How can art help improve a person's emotional health?
Art can play a profound role in enhancing an individual's emotional well-being in several ways. Firstly, engaging with art—whether through creation or appreciation—can serve as a powerful form of self-expression. It allows individuals to articulate feelings that might be difficult to communicate verbally, which can be incredibly therapeutic. Additionally, art often acts as a medium for catharsis, helping people to release pent-up emotions and find relief from stress and anxiety. Moreover, the act of creating art can be a meditative experience, promoting mindfulness and allowing individuals to focus on the present moment. This can significantly reduce feelings of overwhelm and help cultivate a sense of inner peace. Finally, participating in community art projects can foster social connections and a sense of belonging, which are crucial for overall emotional health. Overall, art is not just a form of entertainment; it is a vital tool for emotional healing and growth.
Why do you think some people prefer certain types of art more than others?
I believe people are often drawn to specific styles or genres of art due to a combination of personal experiences and cultural influences. For instance, someone who grew up in a household filled with classical music might develop a profound appreciation for that genre, while another person might gravitate towards contemporary art because it resonates with their modern lifestyle. Additionally, art can evoke powerful emotions, and individuals often seek out styles that reflect their own feelings or aspirations. This emotional connection can create a sense of belonging or understanding, making the art feel more relevant to their lives. Ultimately, the diversity in art allows everyone to find something that speaks to them personally, which is incredibly enriching.
What new styles in art do you think could appear in the next ten years?
I believe we’re on the cusp of some fascinating developments in the art world over the next decade. One significant trend could be the rise of virtual reality and augmented reality experiences, allowing artists to create immersive environments that engage viewers in entirely new ways. This technology not only enhances the artistic experience but also makes art more accessible to a broader audience. Additionally, I anticipate a growing emphasis on sustainability, with artists increasingly using eco-friendly materials and practices. This trend reflects a broader societal shift towards environmental consciousness and could inspire a new wave of creativity focused on our planet's future.
How can we make art easier for everyone to enjoy?
To make art more accessible to the general public, one effective strategy is to increase the number of community art programs that cater to diverse demographics. By offering workshops and classes in local community centers, individuals from all walks of life can engage with different art forms, which can foster a deeper appreciation for the arts. Furthermore, collaborating with schools to integrate art into the curriculum can spark creativity and encourage young people to explore their artistic talents. Another vital aspect is to enhance the visibility of art by hosting public exhibitions in unconventional spaces, such as parks or shopping malls. This not only brings art out of traditional galleries but also attracts a wider audience who might not typically visit these venues. Additionally, leveraging social media platforms to showcase local artists and their work can democratize art appreciation, allowing everyone to experience and interact with art in their own way. Ultimately, by breaking down barriers and promoting inclusivity, we can create a vibrant artistic community that everyone can enjoy.
