Speaking test #258
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Who is your favorite celebrity in India?
Oh, that's a tough one. I really admire Aamir Khan's acting abilities and the way he uses his platform to bring attention to social issues. He's definitely at the top of my list.
Do you like any foreign celebrities?
Absolutely! I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone. They're both such talented actresses and have great personalities too.
Would you want to be a celebrity in the future?
Hmm, I'm not sure. While it would be fun to have a larger platform to share my talents and ideas, the lack of privacy and constant scrutiny would be a huge drawback for me.
Do you think we should respect famous people's privacy?
Definitely. No one deserves to have their private life constantly on display for the world to see. Famous people are still human and deserve to have their own space and time to themselves.
Do you like changes? Why?
I'd say I'm generally a fan of change. I think it keeps things interesting and helps us grow and learn new things. Plus, I'm the type of person who gets a little restless when things stay the same for too long.
What have been some changes in your living area/ city recently?
There have been a few notable changes in my city recently. For one, there's been a lot of construction going on. They're building a new shopping mall, and there are several new apartment buildings going up as well. It's definitely changing the skyline a bit. Additionally, there have been some changes to the public transportation system. They've added a few new bus routes and extended the hours of operation for the subway.
Have you changed a lot since your childhood?
Definitely. I think we all change a lot as we grow and experience new things. When I was a kid, I was pretty shy and introverted. I've definitely come out of my shell more as I've gotten older, and I'm much more confident and outgoing now. I've also learned a lot and developed new interests and hobbies.
What do you plan to change next year?
I'm not sure specifically what changes I'll make next year, but I'm always looking for ways to improve and grow. Personally, I'd like to work on my physical fitness and maybe pick up a new hobby or two. As far as my career goes, I'm always looking for new opportunities and ways to advance. So, I'm sure there will be some changes there as well.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How might friendships made in childhood be different from those made later in life?
Friendships formed in childhood often possess a unique innocence and simplicity that can be quite different from those we cultivate later in life. For example, childhood friendships are typically built around shared experiences, such as playing games or attending school together, which creates a sense of bonding that can feel effortless. In contrast, adult friendships tend to be more complex and often require a greater investment of time and effort to maintain, as busy lifestyles can get in the way. Furthermore, while childhood friends may drift apart naturally as interests change, adult friendships often reflect deeper values and mutual support, making them potentially more meaningful and enduring. Ultimately, both types of friendships are valuable, but they serve different purposes in our lives as we grow and evolve.
Why do some people feel closer to certain friends than to others?
People often feel a stronger connection with certain friends due to shared experiences and values. For instance, friends who have gone through similar life challenges or milestones, like graduating from university or experiencing a breakup, tend to bond more closely. Additionally, factors like common interests—be it a love for a specific sport, music genre, or hobby—can create a deeper sense of understanding and camaraderie. Emotional support also plays a crucial role; when someone consistently shows up for you in tough times, it naturally cultivates a stronger connection. Lastly, the amount of time spent together can significantly influence these feelings; the more memories you create, the more intertwined your lives become.
How important do you think trust is for keeping a friendship?
Trust is absolutely paramount in maintaining a friendship. Without trust, the foundation of any relationship can crumble, leading to misunderstandings and resentment. Friends rely on each other for support and honesty, and when that trust is compromised, it can create a rift that's hard to mend. I believe that open communication plays a crucial role in building and nurturing that trust; when friends feel safe to share their thoughts and feelings, it strengthens their bond. Ultimately, it's the mutual reliance on each other that transforms a casual acquaintance into a lasting friendship.
What makes some friendships last longer than others?
Some friendships last longer than others mainly because of the shared experiences and mutual understanding that develop over time. Friends who go through significant moments together, whether they are joyful or challenging, often build a deeper bond that can withstand the test of time. Additionally, effective communication plays a crucial role; those who can express their thoughts and feelings openly tend to resolve conflicts more easily, which strengthens their relationship. It’s also important to consider the commitment levels of both individuals—if both parties are willing to invest time and effort into maintaining the friendship, it’s much more likely to endure. Ultimately, it’s this combination of trust, support, and the ability to adapt that helps some friendships thrive while others fade away.
How can friendships change as technology and communication improve?
The nature of friendships is undoubtedly evolving alongside advancements in technology and communication. For instance, social media platforms have made it incredibly easy to maintain connections, even across long distances, which can lead to a more global network of friends. However, I think this also means that the depth of some relationships might suffer, as people often engage in more superficial interactions rather than meaningful conversations. Additionally, the rise of instant messaging has created a culture of immediacy, which can sometimes lead to misunderstandings or a lack of emotional nuance. Ultimately, while technology offers fantastic opportunities for connection, it’s crucial that we remain mindful of nurturing those deeper bonds that truly enrich our lives.
What can people do to make their friendships stronger over time?
To strengthen friendships over time, individuals can take several proactive measures. First and foremost, regular communication is key; whether it's through texts, calls, or face-to-face meet-ups, staying in touch helps maintain the connection. Additionally, making an effort to prioritize quality time together, like planning monthly outings or even simple coffee catch-ups, can significantly enhance the bond. It’s also important to show genuine interest in each other's lives, celebrating accomplishments and providing support during tough times. Lastly, being open and honest about feelings can foster a deeper level of trust, which is fundamental to any lasting friendship.
