Introduction · Q2

Where are you from?

Introduction · Q3

Do you work or are you a student?

Evening · Q1

Do you prefer studying in the morning or in the afternoon?

I prefer studying in the morning. I find that my brain is freshest and most focused first thing in the day, and it helps me to get a lot done before the day gets too busy. Plus, starting my day with some productive studying helps me to feel accomplished and motivated to tackle the rest of my to-do list.

Evening · Q2

What do you usually do in the evening?

In the evening, I like to relax and unwind. Sometimes I'll read a book or watch a movie, other times I'll catch up with friends or family over the phone. If I'm feeling active, I might go for a run or do a workout. And of course, I always make sure to get a good night's sleep.

Evening · Q3

What did you do in the evening when you were little? Why?

When I was little, I used to spend my evenings playing with my siblings and friends. We would often have impromptu soccer games or bike rides around the neighborhood. We did this because we loved spending time outdoors and being active. It was a great way for us to burn off energy and have fun together.

Evening · Q4

Are there any differences between what you do in the evening now and what you did in the past?

The main difference between what I do in the evening now and what I did in the past is that I'm a lot more focused on self-care and relaxation. As an adult, I've learned the importance of taking time to unwind and de-stress after a long day. When I was a kid, I was more focused on having fun and being active, which is still important to me, but I now also make sure to take care of my mental and physical health in the evenings.

Family · Q1

How often do you spend time with your family?

I spend a good amount of time with my family on a regular basis. We usually make it a point to have a family dinner together at least once a week, and we also make sure to schedule other activities, such as trips or outings, on a regular basis as well.

Family · Q2

How do you spend time with your family?

We spend time with each other in a variety of ways. We'll often go out for a meal together, either at a restaurant or for a picnic in the park. We also enjoy doing activities together, such as going to the movies, taking a trip to the beach, or going on a hike. We also like to spend time at home together, playing games or watching movies.

Family · Q3

Do you want to live with your family in the future?

I wouldn't mind living with my family in the future, as long as everyone is on the same page. It's always nice to have the support and companionship of loved ones, especially as you grow older. However, I also value my independence and may choose to live on my own as well.

Family · Q4

How has your family influenced you?

My family has had a significant impact on shaping me into the person I am today. They have always been supportive of my goals and aspirations, and have encouraged me to chase my dreams. Additionally, they have instilled strong values in me, such as the importance of hard work, honesty, and kindness. I am forever grateful for their guidance and love.

Part 3 · Discussion

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.

Discussion · Q1

How could a street feel different in a busy city compared to a calm suburban area?

That's a fascinating question! In a busy urban area, the atmosphere of a street is often buzzing with energy; you'll find a constant flow of people, honking cars, and street vendors selling their goods. The sounds of conversations blend with the rhythm of life, creating a vibrant backdrop that can be quite exhilarating. In contrast, a quiet suburban neighborhood exudes a more tranquil vibe. You might hear children playing in yards, the rustle of leaves in the breeze, and the occasional sound of a lawnmower, which fosters a sense of community and relaxation. These environments cater to different lifestyles and preferences, showcasing how varied our urban and suburban experiences can be.

Discussion · Q2

How much do the features of a street affect how people who live or work nearby behave?

Absolutely, the characteristics of a street can significantly shape the behavior of those who inhabit or work in the area. For instance, a clean and well-maintained street often fosters a sense of community and encourages positive social interactions among residents, making them more likely to engage with one another. Conversely, a neglected or unsafe street can lead to a feeling of isolation and increase anti-social behavior, as people may feel less inclined to venture outside. Furthermore, the presence of green spaces or local businesses can enhance the overall atmosphere, promoting a more vibrant and engaged community. So, in essence, the design and upkeep of a street play a crucial role in influencing the social dynamics of the neighborhood.

Discussion · Q3

How can the layout of a street improve the quality of life in a neighborhood?

The design of a street plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall quality of life in a community. For instance, well-planned streets that incorporate green spaces not only beautify the area but also provide residents with a place to relax and socialize. Furthermore, pedestrian-friendly designs encourage walking and cycling, which can lead to a healthier lifestyle and reduce traffic congestion. Additionally, streets that foster a sense of community engagement through features like local markets or public art can strengthen social ties among residents. Ultimately, a thoughtfully designed street can transform a neighborhood into a vibrant and cohesive community hub.

Discussion · Q4

What makes some streets more liked than others by locals and tourists?

Some streets become more popular than others due to a variety of factors, including their vibrant atmosphere and accessibility. For instance, streets lined with trendy cafes, boutique shops, and cultural attractions tend to draw both residents and tourists alike, creating a lively environment. Additionally, historical significance or unique architecture can make certain streets stand out, offering visitors a glimpse into the local culture and heritage. Furthermore, the presence of public transport options can significantly enhance a street’s appeal, making it easier for people to explore the area. Overall, it’s a combination of charm, convenience, and cultural richness that makes certain streets a must-visit.

Discussion · Q5

How could changes in transport influence how streets in cities are built in the future?

Changes in transportation are likely to have a profound impact on the future development of urban streets. As we shift towards more sustainable modes of transport, such as electric vehicles and cycling, cities may prioritize green spaces and pedestrian-friendly pathways. This could lead to the creation of multi-modal transport hubs, where various forms of transit converge, making it easier for people to navigate without relying solely on cars. Additionally, with the rise of smart technology, streets might become more interconnected, enhancing traffic flow and reducing congestion. Overall, these transformations could foster a more vibrant and livable urban environment, encouraging communities to thrive.

Discussion · Q6

What steps can be taken to make streets safer and easier to use for people walking and cycling?

To enhance the safety and accessibility of streets for pedestrians and cyclists, a multifaceted approach is essential. First and foremost, dedicated bike lanes should be implemented, clearly separated from vehicular traffic. This would not only protect cyclists but also encourage more people to take up cycling as a mode of transport. Additionally, improving street lighting and adding more pedestrian crossings would make a significant difference, particularly in urban areas where visibility can be poor. Furthermore, conducting regular public awareness campaigns about road safety can foster a culture of respect among all road users, which is vital for creating a harmonious environment. Overall, these measures could transform our streets into safer, more inviting spaces for everyone.
