Speaking test #304
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like music? Why / why not?
I absolutely love music! For me, it's a way to express my emotions, connect with others and even forget about the world for a little while. Whether I'm feeling happy, sad, or just need some background noise, there's always a song that can fit the mood. I think music is one of the most powerful forms of art and it's something that has always been a big part of my life.
What kind of music do you listen to? Why?
I listen to a wide variety of music, but my favorite genre is probably alternative rock. I love the energy and emotion that comes through in the lyrics and the unique sound that different bands bring to the genre. I also enjoy listening to indie music and some electronic music. I find that these genres allow me to discover new artists and sounds, and I appreciate the diversity that they offer.
Has the music that you listen to changed since you were young?
Yes, my taste in music has definitely evolved over the years. When I was younger, I mostly listened to pop music and whatever was popular at the time. As I got older, I started to explore different genres and discovered that there was so much more out there than I had ever realized. My taste in music has become more diverse and I now appreciate a wider range of sounds and styles.
Do you think older and younger generations prefer different types of music?
I think that different generations can have different musical preferences, but it's not always a straightforward distinction. For example, older people might be more inclined to listen to classical music or traditional genres, while younger people might be more into hip-hop or electronic music. However, there are also plenty of older people who love contemporary music and younger people who appreciate older genres. I think it's important to remember that music is a personal thing and everyone has their own unique tastes and preferences.
Which instrument do you like listening to most? [Why?
?] I absolutely adore listening to the piano. The soft melodies and intricate harmonies that can be produced from a piano are truly mesmerizing to me. The piano is a versatile instrument that can be used to play a wide range of genres and styles, from classical to pop. It's also a beautiful instrument to look at and the sound it produces is simply breathtaking.
Have you ever learned to play a musical instrument? [Which one?
?] Yes, I have had the pleasure of learning how to play the guitar. It's a wonderful instrument that I've grown to love over the years. I find that playing the guitar is a great way to relax and unwind after a long day, and it's also a great way to express myself creatively.
Do you think children should learn to play a musical instrument at school? [Why/Why not?
?] I definitely think that children should learn to play a musical instrument at school. Not only does learning to play an instrument help with the development of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, but it also helps with creativity and self-expression. Additionally, playing an instrument can also have a positive impact on children's cognitive development and can even improve their academic performance. Overall, I think that learning to play a musical instrument is an incredibly valuable skill that should be taught to children at school.
How easy would it be to learn to play an instrument without a teacher? [Why?
?] Learning to play an instrument without a teacher would be quite difficult, in my opinion. While there are certainly resources available, such as online tutorials and instructional videos, nothing can replace the guidance and feedback that a teacher can provide. A teacher can provide personalized instruction and can help identify and correct any mistakes that a student may be making. Additionally, a teacher can provide encouragement and motivation, which is essential for any student trying to learn an instrument. Without a teacher, it would be much more difficult to progress and improve one's playing skills.

The real-life event or person the film is based on
I'd like to talk about the film "The Man Who Knew Infinity," which is based on the real-life story of the renowned Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan. Ramanujan was a self-taught mathematical genius who made significant contributions to number theory, infinite series, and continued fractions in the early 20th century.
The main plot or storyline of the film
The main plot of the film revolves around Ramanujan's journey from his humble beginnings in India to his collaboration with the British mathematician G.H. Hardy at Cambridge University. The film beautifully portrays Ramanujan's struggles with racism, cultural differences, and his battle with tuberculosis, all while showcasing his unparalleled mathematical brilliance.

How do movies based on true stories differ from those that are made up?
Films based on real-life events and those that are purely fictional differ significantly in their approach to storytelling and emotional impact. For starters, films based on true stories often carry a sense of authenticity that can resonate deeply with audiences, as viewers are usually drawn to the idea that they are witnessing something that actually happened. This can lead to a more profound emotional connection, as people might find themselves relating to the struggles and triumphs of real-life characters. On the other hand, purely fictional films have the freedom to explore creative narratives and fantastical elements that can take viewers on an imaginative journey. These films can delve into abstract themes and scenarios that might not be possible in real life, allowing for a broader range of artistic expression. While both types of films can be entertaining and thought-provoking, the stark contrast lies in the weight of reality versus the boundless possibilities of fiction.
Some people think movies based on true stories are more powerful than made-up ones. What do you think about this?
I absolutely see where that perspective comes from! Films based on real events often carry a certain weight and authenticity that can deeply resonate with audiences. When we watch a movie that depicts genuine stories, it can evoke a sense of empathy and connection, making the experience feel more profoundly personal. On the other hand, fictional films have their own magic; they can transport us to entirely different worlds and explore imaginative themes that might not be possible in reality. Ultimately, I think both types of films have their unique strengths, but there’s something undeniably powerful about a well-crafted story that reflects real-life struggles and triumphs.
How important is it for filmmakers to correctly show historical events or real people in their films?
Accurately representing historical events or real individuals is incredibly significant for filmmakers, as it fosters a sense of authenticity and trust with the audience. When films take creative liberties and stray too far from the truth, they can inadvertently distort public perception and shape misconceptions about history. This is especially important in an age where misinformation can spread so rapidly. Moreover, by portraying real events and people accurately, filmmakers not only pay homage to the individuals involved but also encourage viewers to engage with history in a meaningful way. Ultimately, a well-researched film can serve as a powerful educational tool, sparking interest and prompting deeper exploration into the past.
Why do you think people prefer movies based on true stories instead of those made up from imagination?
I think audiences are often drawn to films that depict true stories because they resonate on a deeper emotional level. When viewers see real-life events or struggles portrayed on screen, it fosters a sense of genuine connection and authenticity that purely imaginary narratives sometimes lack. Additionally, true stories can be incredibly inspiring and offer valuable life lessons, prompting audiences to reflect on their own experiences and challenges. There's also a certain intrinsic fascination with reality—people are naturally curious about the lives of others, especially when those lives are filled with extraordinary circumstances. Ultimately, these films not only entertain but also provoke thought and discussion, making them particularly appealing.
How can showing real events in movies change how people see those events later on?
The portrayal of real-life events in films can have a profound impact on public perception, often shaping how these events are remembered and understood. When filmmakers take creative liberties, they may highlight certain aspects while downplaying others, which can lead to a skewed interpretation of the facts. For instance, films like "Schindler's List" or "12 Years a Slave" not only entertain but also educate audiences about historical injustices, potentially fostering a greater sense of empathy and awareness. Moreover, a well-crafted cinematic narrative can leave a lasting impression, making it easier for people to recall specific details or themes associated with those events. In this way, films can serve as powerful vehicles for social commentary, influencing collective memory and shaping future discussions around those real-life occurrences.
How can filmmakers make sure they tell true stories in a caring and respectful way?
Filmmakers have a pivotal role in shaping narratives, especially when it comes to real-life stories. To present these narratives in a sensitive and respectful manner, they could start by engaging with the individuals or communities directly affected by the events. This kind of collaborative storytelling not only enriches the narrative but also ensures that the perspectives of those involved are accurately represented. Furthermore, conducting thorough research and being mindful of cultural nuances can help avoid any potential misrepresentation or insensitivity. Lastly, involving sensitivity readers or cultural consultants in the production process can provide invaluable insights and help the filmmakers navigate any complex themes or issues that arise. Overall, it's about striking a balance between artistic expression and ethical responsibility.
