Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Where is your favourite place to sit?
My favourite place to sit would have to be in my garden. It's a small space but it's surrounded by greenery and it's the perfect spot for me to relax and unwind after a long day. The sound of birds chirping and the gentle breeze makes it feel like a sanctuary.
Do you always sit down for a long time?
No, I don't always sit down for a long time. I try to make sure I take regular breaks and move around to keep my body active. Sitting down for prolonged periods of time can be bad for your health, so I try to be mindful of that.
Do you feel sleepy when you are sitting down?
It depends on the situation. If I'm tired and it's late at night, then yes, I might feel sleepy when I'm sitting down. But if I'm in a stimulating environment or if I'm engaged in a conversation or activity, then I'm less likely to feel sleepy.
When you were a kid did you usually sit on the floor?
Yes, when I was a kid I used to sit on the floor quite often. I remember playing with my toys on the floor and sometimes I would even do my homework on the floor. It was a lot more comfortable for me than sitting on a chair.
What do you usually do on your birthday?
On my birthday, I usually spend time with my friends and family. We usually have a nice dinner or go out to a fun activity. I also like to treat myself to something special, like a massage or a new piece of clothing.
What did you do on your birthday when you were young?
When I was young, I used to have big birthday parties with all of my friends. We would play games and have lots of snacks. My parents would always try to make it a really special day for me.
Is it important for you to celebrate your birthday?
Yes, celebrating my birthday is definitely important to me. It's a chance for me to reflect on the past year and think about all of the things I've accomplished. It's also a great excuse to spend time with my loved ones and have some fun.
Which birthdays are considered important in your country?
In my country, all birthdays are considered important, but certain milestone birthdays are often given extra attention. For example, turning 16 or 18 is often seen as a rite of passage and is celebrated with special parties or ceremonies. Turning 30 or 40 is also often seen as a significant milestone, and people often throw big parties or go on special trips to mark the occasion.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

How can the success of small businesses be different from that of big companies in today's economy?
The success of small companies often hinges on their agility and ability to adapt quickly to market changes, which can be a significant advantage over larger corporations that may be bogged down by bureaucracy. Small businesses can foster a more personalized relationship with their customers, leading to greater customer loyalty and a unique brand identity. In contrast, larger corporations often have the resources to invest heavily in marketing and technology, which can propel their growth on a grand scale. However, this might also result in a lack of innovation, as they tend to stick to tried-and-true methods rather than taking risks. Ultimately, while both types of businesses have their own paths to success, the small companies often thrive on their creativity and close-knit community feel, which can resonate deeply with consumers today.
Some people think small businesses are better at coming up with new ideas than big ones. What do you think about this?
I absolutely agree that innovation often flourishes in small businesses more than in larger corporations. Small businesses tend to have a flexible structure, allowing them to adapt quickly to changes in the market, which is a significant advantage when it comes to implementing new ideas. Additionally, the close-knit environment of smaller teams fosters a culture of creativity where everyone feels empowered to contribute, leading to unique and groundbreaking solutions. In contrast, larger companies often face bureaucratic hurdles that can stifle creativity and slow down the decision-making process. Overall, while both types of businesses can be innovative, the agility and personal touch of small enterprises often give them the edge in this area.
How important do you think being adaptable is for a small business to succeed in a competitive market?
I believe adaptability is absolutely paramount for the success of a small business, especially in today’s fast-paced and competitive market. Being able to pivot and respond to changing consumer preferences or economic conditions can mean the difference between thriving and merely surviving. For instance, businesses that embraced online platforms during the pandemic not only managed to stay afloat but often saw their sales soar. Moreover, adaptability fosters innovation; when small businesses are willing to experiment and shift their strategies, they often discover new opportunities that can set them apart from their competitors. In essence, a flexible approach can significantly enhance a small business's resilience and long-term viability.
Why do you think a lot of shoppers choose to help small businesses instead of big chains?
Many consumers are increasingly drawn to small businesses because they often offer a more personalized experience. When you shop at a local store, there's typically a sense of community and connection that you just don’t find in larger chains. People appreciate the unique products that small businesses provide, which often reflect local culture and craftsmanship. Additionally, supporting these enterprises can give consumers a sense of contributing to the local economy, which fosters a feeling of civic pride. Ultimately, it’s about making choices that align with values, and many find that small businesses resonate more with their desire for authenticity and sustainability.
What changes do you think we could see in small businesses over the next ten years?
I believe the small business landscape is poised for significant transformation in the next decade. With the rapid advancement of technology, especially in areas like e-commerce and digital marketing, we can expect more small businesses to leverage online platforms to reach wider audiences. This shift will likely lead to an increase in niche markets, as entrepreneurs will be able to cater to specific customer needs with greater precision. Moreover, sustainability is becoming a critical focus, so we might see a rise in eco-friendly practices and socially responsible business models, which could redefine what consumers expect from small enterprises. Overall, it's an exciting time for small businesses to innovate and adapt!
What steps can small businesses take to improve their chances of succeeding in a tough economy?
In today’s competitive landscape, small companies can adopt several strategic measures to boost their resilience. First and foremost, they should focus on niche marketing, which allows them to cater to specific customer needs that larger companies might overlook. By honing in on a particular audience, they can create a loyal customer base that values their unique offerings. Additionally, investing in digital transformation is crucial. Embracing technology not only streamlines operations but also broadens their reach through online platforms, enabling them to tap into new markets. Moreover, fostering a strong community presence can significantly enhance their visibility; hosting local events or collaborating with other businesses can create a sense of connection that resonates with consumers. Lastly, maintaining financial agility is essential. This means being adaptable in budgeting and spending, which allows small companies to pivot quickly in response to market shifts. By implementing these strategies, small businesses can not only survive but potentially thrive even in challenging economic climates.
