Speaking test #372
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Would you like to work in a company related to environmental protection?
Absolutely, I have always been passionate about preserving our planet and ensuring that we are living in a sustainable way. Working for a company that has a strong focus on environmental protection would be incredibly fulfilling for me.
How can we protect the environment?
There are a variety of ways that we can all do our part to protect the environment. Simple actions such as reducing our use of plastic, conserving energy and water, and supporting sustainable practices in our daily lives can make a big difference. Additionally, supporting and advocating for government policies that protect the environment is crucial.
Do you think you've done enough to protect the environment?
I am always looking for ways to improve and do more to protect the environment, so I wouldn't say that I have done enough. However, I strive to make conscious choices that align with my values and believe that every little bit helps.
Is there education about environmental protection at school in your country?
Yes, environmental education is included in the curriculum in schools across my country. From a young age, students are taught about the importance of protecting our planet and the ways in which we can all play a role in preserving it. It's great to see such a emphasis placed on environmental education and the importance of sustainability.
Do you prefer studying in the morning or in the afternoon?
I prefer studying in the morning. I find that my brain is freshest and most focused first thing in the day, and it helps me to get a lot done before the day gets too busy. Plus, starting my day with some productive studying helps me to feel accomplished and motivated to tackle the rest of my to-do list.
What do you usually do in the evening?
In the evening, I like to relax and unwind. Sometimes I'll read a book or watch a movie, other times I'll catch up with friends or family over the phone. If I'm feeling active, I might go for a run or do a workout. And of course, I always make sure to get a good night's sleep.
What did you do in the evening when you were little? Why?
When I was little, I used to spend my evenings playing with my siblings and friends. We would often have impromptu soccer games or bike rides around the neighborhood. We did this because we loved spending time outdoors and being active. It was a great way for us to burn off energy and have fun together.
Are there any differences between what you do in the evening now and what you did in the past?
The main difference between what I do in the evening now and what I did in the past is that I'm a lot more focused on self-care and relaxation. As an adult, I've learned the importance of taking time to unwind and de-stress after a long day. When I was a kid, I was more focused on having fun and being active, which is still important to me, but I now also make sure to take care of my mental and physical health in the evenings.

Describe an irritating neighbour in your locality
You should say:
- Who the neighbour is
- What makes them irritating
- How they have affected you or others in the locality
- How you have dealt with the situation
Who the neighbour is
Living in a close-knit community, I have had the opportunity to interact with a variety of neighbors, some of whom have been delightful while others have been quite challenging. One neighbor in particular, Mrs. Sharma, stands out as the most irritating individual in our locality. Mrs. Sharma is a middle-aged woman who lives alone and is known for her nosy and interfering nature. She constantly involves herself in other people's business, spreading rumors and gossip around the neighborhood.
What makes them irritating
What makes Mrs. Sharma particularly irritating is her habit of prying into everyone's affairs and passing judgment without any basis. She seems to have an opinion about everything and does not hesitate to express it, often in a condescending manner. Her constant meddling in trivial matters creates unnecessary tension and conflict among neighbors, leading to a strained atmosphere in the community.
How they have affected you or others in the locality
The presence of Mrs. Sharma has affected the harmony and peace of our locality. Her negative influence has resulted in strained relationships and unnecessary drama among neighbors. Many residents, including myself, have been at the receiving end of her unwarranted interference and have had to deal with the repercussions of her actions. Overall, Mrs. Sharma's behavior has created a sense of unease and discomfort in our otherwise peaceful neighborhood.
How you have dealt with the situation
In dealing with the situation, I have chosen to maintain a cordial but distant relationship with Mrs. Sharma. I try to avoid engaging in conversations that could potentially lead to conflict or gossip. Instead, I focus on fostering positive relationships with other neighbors who contribute to a harmonious environment. By setting boundaries and not allowing myself to be drawn into Mrs. Sharma's drama, I have been able to minimize the impact of her irritating behavior on my life and maintain a sense of peace within the community.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How could the actions of an annoying neighbor be different from those of a nice one?
An irritating neighbor often engages in behaviors that can be quite disruptive, such as playing loud music late at night or neglecting their property, which can create a chaotic atmosphere. In contrast, a friendly neighbor tends to be more considerate, often showing thoughtfulness by keeping noise levels down and maintaining their yard, which contributes positively to the neighborhood's overall vibe. Moreover, while an irritating neighbor might avoid social interactions, a friendly one is likely to be open and approachable, fostering a sense of community. These differences can significantly impact not only individual relationships but also the overall cohesiveness of the neighborhood. It’s fascinating how these contrasting behaviors can really shape our living environment, isn’t it?
Why do people have different opinions on what makes a neighbor annoying?
People can have differing views on what makes a neighbor irritating due to a variety of factors, including personal preferences and cultural backgrounds. For instance, someone who values peace and quiet might find loud music in the evening absolutely unbearable, while another person might see it as a fun and lively atmosphere. Additionally, lifestyle choices play a significant role; a neighbor who loves gardening may be annoyed by someone who doesn’t take care of their property, whereas others might not even notice these differences. Finally, communication styles also matter—some people prefer direct conversations about issues, while others might find that approach confrontational, leading to misunderstandings. It’s fascinating how such a simple relationship can be so complex!
How important is it for people to have a good relationship with their neighbors?
Maintaining a good relationship with neighbors is incredibly significant for individuals, and it can have a profound impact on one’s overall quality of life. When people foster a sense of community, it often leads to a strong support network, which can be invaluable during challenging times. Not only does it create a safer environment, but it also enhances social interactions, making neighborhoods feel more welcoming and cohesive. Additionally, having friendly neighbors can facilitate meaningful connections, where individuals can share experiences, cultures, and even resources. In essence, good neighborly relationships can cultivate a sense of belonging that enriches our everyday lives.
Why do you think some people put up with annoying neighbors better than others?
I believe the level of tolerance towards annoying neighbors often depends on individual personality traits and past experiences. Some people are naturally more easygoing and prefer to maintain a harmonious living environment, so they might choose to overlook minor annoyances. Others, however, might have a lower threshold for frustration, possibly due to their upbringing or previous negative experiences with neighbors. Additionally, the context of their lives, such as stress from work or personal issues, can also influence how they react to disturbances. Ultimately, it's fascinating how a blend of personality and circumstances shapes our responses to those who live around us!
How could the way neighbors interact change in the future?
The dynamics of neighborhood relationships are likely to evolve significantly in the future, especially with the advent of technology and changing lifestyles. For instance, as more people work remotely, the traditional boundaries of neighborhoods might blur, leading to a more interconnected community where individuals forge relationships online before meeting in person. Additionally, urbanization and population growth could create diverse neighborhoods, fostering cultural exchange and cross-cultural friendships. However, there’s also the potential for increased isolation, as people may become more engrossed in their digital lives, which could hinder face-to-face interactions. Overall, it’s fascinating to think about how these factors will shape the way we connect and support one another in our neighborhoods, potentially leading to both stronger bonds and new challenges.
What steps can be taken to make things better between neighbors who are having problems?
Improving relationships between neighbors who are at odds with each other can be quite a challenge, but there are several effective measures that can be taken. First and foremost, open communication is essential. Encouraging neighbors to sit down and have a candid conversation can often clear up misunderstandings and foster a sense of community. Additionally, organizing neighborhood events, like block parties or community clean-ups, can create opportunities for neighbors to interact in a more relaxed setting, helping to build rapport. Another valuable approach is mediation. Having a neutral third party facilitate discussions can help ensure that all voices are heard and that the focus remains on finding common ground. Lastly, it’s important to promote a culture of mutual respect and understanding, where neighbors are encouraged to appreciate each other’s differences rather than letting them drive a wedge between them. By taking these steps, we can cultivate a more harmonious living environment, which ultimately benefits everyone involved.
