Speaking test #377
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Have you got lots of apps on your phone or tablet? [Why/Why not?
?] Yes, I have quite a few apps on my phone and tablet. I like to keep up with new technologies and try out new apps that can help me with my daily tasks or provide some entertainment. Plus, I find it convenient to have everything in one place instead of having to search for something on the internet all the time.
Do you have a favorite app? [Why/Why not?
?] Yes, I do have a favorite app. It's called "Evernote" and it's a great tool for organizing my notes and tasks. I use it on a daily basis and it really helps me keep track of everything I need to do. It's also really user-friendly and I can access it from any device, which makes it even more convenient.
How do you find out about different apps? [Why/Why not?
?] I usually find out about new apps through friends or online recommendations. I also like to browse the app store from time to time and see what's new or popular. Sometimes, I come across an app that looks interesting and I'll give it a try. It's a great way to discover new things and see if they can be useful for me.
Have you downloaded any new apps recently? [Why/Why not?
?] Yes, I have downloaded a few new apps recently. One of them is a language learning app called "Duolingo" which I'm using to brush up on my Spanish. I'm also trying out a meditation app called "Headspace" which has been recommended to me by a friend. I'm always open to trying out new things and seeing if they can help improve my life in some way.
What kinds of things do you have to bring when you go out?
Oh, well, it really depends on where I'm going and what I'll be doing. But generally speaking, I always make sure to have my phone, wallet, and keys with me. If I'm heading to work or school, I'll also grab my laptop or notebook. And if I'm going out for a day trip or something, I'll pack a water bottle and snacks.
Did you ever forget to bring something?
Yeah, absolutely. I'm definitely guilty of being forgetful sometimes. I've forgotten my phone or my keys at home before, and it's always a hassle to have to go back and get them. I've also forgotten my headphones or charger when I'm traveling, which can be a bit of a bummer.
How do you remind yourself?
I usually make a checklist of things that I need to bring with me before I leave the house. I'll put it on my phone or on a piece of paper, and I'll go through it before I head out the door. That way, I can make sure that I have everything I need before I leave.
Do you carry different things in the morning and the evening?
Not really. The things I need to bring with me are pretty consistent, no matter what time of day it is. Of course, if I'm going out for a night out or something, I might grab a different bag or bring a jacket, but for the most part, the essentials stay the same.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Which holiday was it
Recently, I celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights, which is one of the most significant festivals in India. Diwali is a time of joy, happiness, and togetherness, celebrated by lighting oil lamps, bursting fireworks, and sharing sweets with loved ones. This year, I decided to celebrate Diwali in a traditional manner by decorating my house with colorful rangoli patterns, lighting diyas, and setting off fireworks with my family.
How you celebrated it
I celebrated Diwali with my immediate family members, including my parents, siblings, and grandparents. We all gathered at our ancestral home, which was beautifully decorated with lights and flowers. Together, we performed the traditional puja (prayer) to seek blessings from the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. After the puja, we exchanged gifts and sweets, enjoying the festive spirit and the warmth of family bonding.
Who you celebrated it with
The presence of my family members made this Diwali celebration truly special and memorable. The laughter, conversations, and shared moments created a sense of unity and love that enhanced the festive experience. Additionally, the traditional rituals and customs we followed added a sense of cultural richness and spiritual significance to the celebration, making it more meaningful and unforgettable.
What made it memorable
In conclusion, celebrating Diwali with my family was a heartwarming experience that I will cherish for years to come. The combination of traditional customs, festive decorations, and the presence of loved ones made this holiday celebration truly joyful and unforgettable. Diwali not only brought us closer as a family but also reinforced the importance of traditions and togetherness in our lives.

How do different cultures celebrate holidays in different ways?
That's a fascinating question! The way people celebrate holidays can vary immensely depending on their cultural backgrounds. For instance, in many Western countries, Christmas is often marked by grand family gatherings and the exchange of gifts, while in countries like India, Diwali is celebrated with vibrant festivals of lights, where families come together to light lamps and share sweets. Additionally, some cultures incorporate unique traditions that reflect their history and values; for example, the Japanese celebration of Hanami involves appreciating the beauty of cherry blossoms, which is a beautiful way to connect with nature and each other. Ultimately, these diverse practices not only highlight the richness of our world’s cultures but also foster a sense of community and belonging among people.
How important is it for people to celebrate holidays in their lives?
Celebrating holidays is absolutely essential for people, as it provides an invaluable opportunity to strengthen relationships with family and friends. These occasions often serve as a break from the daily grind, allowing individuals to relax and recharge. Moreover, holidays often carry cultural and historical significance, helping to foster a sense of community and belonging. In a fast-paced world, taking the time to celebrate can also promote mental well-being, as it encourages reflection and gratitude for the positive aspects of life. Overall, these traditions enrich our lives and create cherished memories that can last a lifetime.
How do holidays help make family or community connections stronger?
Holidays play a crucial role in reinforcing familial and societal bonds. They provide a unique opportunity for families to come together, share experiences, and create lasting memories. For instance, during festive seasons like Christmas or Diwali, families often gather to celebrate traditions, which not only fosters a sense of belonging but also helps in passing down cultural values to younger generations. Similarly, in a broader societal context, public holidays can unite communities, allowing people to participate in celebrations or events that promote a sense of togetherness and mutual respect. Ultimately, these shared moments during holidays can significantly strengthen the emotional ties that bind us, making relationships more meaningful and enriching.
Why do you think people usually feel a deep emotional bond with holidays?
People often develop a strong emotional connection to holidays because these occasions are deeply rooted in cultural traditions and personal memories. For many, holidays serve as a time for family gatherings, where loved ones come together to celebrate shared experiences and create lasting memories. This sense of belonging and togetherness can evoke feelings of nostalgia, reminding individuals of cherished moments from their past. Additionally, holidays often symbolize a break from the routine of everyday life, allowing people to relax and reconnect with what truly matters. Overall, the combination of tradition, family, and the joy of celebration contributes to the profound emotional ties that people feel towards these special times of the year.
What differences could we notice in holiday celebrations later on?
The future of holiday celebrations is bound to be fascinating! With the rapid advancement of technology, I can envision a shift towards more immersive experiences. For instance, virtual reality could play a significant role, allowing people to partake in global celebrations from their own homes, creating a sense of global connection. Moreover, as society becomes increasingly environmentally conscious, I believe we might see a rise in sustainable practices during holidays, such as eco-friendly decorations and local produce for feasting. Lastly, the blending of cultures through globalization might lead to the emergence of hybrid celebrations, where traditions from different parts of the world come together, enriching our holiday experiences even more!
What steps can communities take to make sure traditional holidays are kept alive?
To ensure that traditional holidays are preserved, communities can take a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, organizing cultural festivals that celebrate these holidays can raise awareness and encourage participation among younger generations. This could involve local schools incorporating traditional customs into their curricula, allowing students to learn the significance of these celebrations. Additionally, communities could leverage social media platforms to share stories and images from these holidays, creating a sense of collective identity and pride. Ultimately, fostering intergenerational dialogue, where elders share their experiences and practices, can be invaluable in keeping these traditions alive and vibrant.
