Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like the city you are living in now? [Why?
?] Oh yeah, absolutely! I mean, it's not perfect by any means, but it's definitely got its charms. For one thing, it's got a really vibrant arts scene - there are always concerts and exhibitions and stuff like that happening, which I really enjoy. Plus, it's just really convenient for getting around - the public transport system is pretty efficient, and there's always a ton of stuff to do and see.
Do you prefer the city or the countryside? [Why?
?] That's a tough one. I think I could go either way, really. On the one hand, I love the fast-paced, energetic vibe of the city - there's always something going on, and I really thrive on that kind of energy. On the other hand, though, I also really appreciate the peace and quiet of the countryside. It's just so relaxing to be surrounded by all that open space and nature. I guess it just depends on my mood, really.
What kinds of city do you like? [Why?
?] I think I'm most drawn to cities that have a really unique character and sense of identity. Like, I love places that are really steeped in history and culture, and that have a really strong local community. I also really enjoy cities that are really diverse and multicultural - I find it really interesting to see how different cultures and traditions intersect and influence each other. Overall, I think it's just really important for a city to have a strong sense of place and identity.
Which city do you want to go to? [Why?
?] There are so many cities that I'd love to visit! Right now, I'm particularly interested in exploring more of Asia - I've always been fascinated by the different cultures and histories of the region, and there are so many amazing cities to explore. In particular, I'd love to visit Tokyo - I've heard that it's such a vibrant, dynamic city, with a really unique blend of traditional and modern elements. I'd also love to visit Seoul and Hong Kong - I think they'd both be really interesting to explore, with their own distinct identities and cultures.
Are clothes important to people where you live?
Oh absolutely. I think fashion is a big deal for many people in my community. People here tend to put a lot of thought into what they wear and how it reflects their personal style.
How do people decide which clothes to buy?
It really depends on the person. Some people are really into following trends and will buy whatever is popular at the moment. Others are more selective and might consider factors like comfort, practicality, and whether the clothing fits with their existing wardrobe.
Would you ever buy clothes for somebody as a present?
Sure, I've definitely given clothes as gifts before. It can be a great way to show someone that you know their style and are paying attention to what they like. However, I always try to make sure I'm choosing something that the recipient will actually want to wear, rather than just picking out something that I like.
Do you think clothes are too important for some people?
I think it's possible for people to place too much emphasis on clothes and what they wear. It's important to remember that clothing is just one aspect of a person's overall appearance and shouldn't define them entirely. However, I also think it's important for people to feel comfortable and confident in what they're wearing, so I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing if someone puts a lot of thought into their wardrobe.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
When you tried to do something but weren’t successful
You should say:
- What you tried to do
- Why you wanted to do it
- How you attempted to do it
- What you learned from this experience
I remember a time when I attempted to learn to play the guitar, but unfortunately, I was not successful in mastering this skill. The idea of playing the guitar had always fascinated me because of the beautiful music it can produce and the joy it can bring to others. I was drawn to the idea of being able to express myself through music and entertain people with my guitar skills.
To start my guitar learning journey, I enrolled in a beginner's guitar class at a local music school. I dedicated hours of practice every day, following online tutorials, practicing chords, and learning simple melodies. Despite my efforts, I struggled to coordinate my fingers to produce clear and harmonious sounds. It was challenging, but I persisted because I was determined to overcome the initial hurdles and make progress.
Through this experience, I learned the importance of patience and perseverance in pursuing new skills. I realized that mastering a musical instrument like the guitar requires consistent practice and a willingness to embrace failures as part of the learning process. Although I did not achieve my initial goal of becoming proficient in playing the guitar, I gained a deeper appreciation for the dedication and hard work required to succeed in any endeavor. This experience taught me valuable lessons about resilience and the importance of embracing challenges as opportunities for growth.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How can the difficulty of different tasks people try to do change?
The levels of difficulty in tasks can vary significantly based on a multitude of factors, including the individual's experience, the complexity of the task itself, and even the resources available. For instance, a task like learning to ride a bike might be relatively straightforward for someone who has had previous experience with balance-related activities, but it could be quite challenging for a complete novice. Additionally, tasks that require cognitive skills, such as solving complex mathematical problems, often present a higher level of difficulty compared to more physical tasks, like assembling furniture. Moreover, the emotional aspect shouldn't be overlooked; a task that induces anxiety, like public speaking, can feel much more challenging regardless of its actual complexity. Ultimately, it’s fascinating how subjective the perception of difficulty can be, influenced by personal strengths and weaknesses.
How important is perseverance for being successful in different activities?
Perseverance is undoubtedly a critical ingredient for achieving success in many areas of life. When we look at the stories of successful individuals, it's often their ability to push through challenges that sets them apart. For instance, in fields like sports or entrepreneurship, those who persist in the face of adversity tend to reap the greatest rewards. It's not just about having talent; it’s about that relentless drive to keep going even when things get tough. In essence, while other factors such as opportunity and skill are important, unwavering determination really can make the difference between those who succeed and those who don't.
How can not reaching a goal help someone grow and improve?
Failing to achieve a goal can be surprisingly beneficial for personal growth and development. Firstly, it often forces individuals to reassess their priorities and motivations, leading to a deeper understanding of what they truly want in life. This process of introspection can be incredibly enlightening, as it encourages people to adapt their strategies and set more realistic, achievable goals. Additionally, experiencing failure can build resilience; it teaches us to bounce back from setbacks and fosters a sense of determination that can be invaluable in future endeavors. Ultimately, these experiences can lead to a more fulfilling and enriched life, as they pave the way for continuous learning and improvement.
Why do you think some people bounce back from failure better than others?
I believe the difference in resilience when facing failure often boils down to a combination of personal mindset and life experiences. Those who possess a growth mindset tend to view setbacks as opportunities for learning rather than as insurmountable obstacles. This perspective allows them to bounce back more readily. Additionally, individuals who have faced challenges early in life may develop coping mechanisms that bolster their resilience over time. Ultimately, it’s about how one interprets and reacts to adversity; some see it as a stepping stone, while others might feel overwhelmed.
How can the results of failed tries affect future tries at similar tasks?
Unsuccessful attempts can have a profound impact on future endeavors, often serving as invaluable learning experiences. When we face setbacks, they can highlight areas for improvement, allowing us to develop a more robust strategy for the next attempt. This process of reflection is crucial; it encourages individuals to analyze what went wrong and to adapt their approach accordingly. Additionally, the resilience built through overcoming challenges can foster a greater sense of determination, making future attempts feel less daunting. Ultimately, while failure can be disheartening, it often lays the groundwork for eventual success, turning those missteps into stepping stones toward achievement.
What methods can people use to boost their chances of doing well in tough tasks?
To succeed in challenging tasks, people can employ a variety of effective strategies. Firstly, setting clear goals is essential, as it provides a roadmap and keeps motivation high. Breaking down the task into smaller, manageable steps can also alleviate feelings of being overwhelmed, making the process feel much less daunting. Additionally, seeking feedback from peers or mentors can offer valuable insights and help refine one’s approach. Lastly, maintaining a positive mindset and practicing resilience can empower individuals to navigate obstacles more effectively and stay focused on their objectives.
