Festivals · Q2

What do you like about these festivals?

What I love about these festivals is the sense of community and togetherness that they bring. People come together to celebrate, share traditional foods and customs, and enjoy the vibrant colors and music. It's also a time for family and friends to come together and make lasting memories.

It's hard to say for sure, but I believe that as long as the roots and traditions of these festivals are upheld, they will continue to be celebrated in much the same way as they have been for generations. Paragraph 1

I once purchased a high-end smartphone, the latest model from a renowned brand, which turned out to be an expensive item that I deeply regretted buying. Initially, I was captivated by its sleek design, advanced features, and impressive camera quality. The advertisements highlighting its cutting-edge technology and stellar reviews further influenced my decision to make the purchase.

Paragraph 2

After acquiring the smartphone, I was initially thrilled and felt a sense of pride in owning such a prestigious device. However, my excitement quickly waned as I encountered various issues with the phone's performance. Despite its hefty price tag, the device frequently lagged, the battery life was disappointing, and the camera did not live up to my expectations. The initial euphoria of owning the latest gadget soon gave way to a feeling of regret and frustration.

Paragraph 3

Realizing that I had made a hasty and imprudent decision, I decided to sell the smartphone at a considerable loss. Although it was a regrettable experience, it taught me a valuable lesson about the importance of conducting thorough research before making significant purchases. I now approach buying expensive items with caution, ensuring that they truly align with my needs and expectations to avoid similar regrets in the future.

Part 3 · Discussion

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.

Discussion · Q1

How could the choice to buy a costly item vary between younger and older people?

Great question! The decision-making process when it comes to purchasing expensive items can vary significantly between younger and older individuals. Younger people often tend to be more impulsive and driven by trends, which can lead them to splurge on the latest gadgets or fashion items. In contrast, older individuals usually exhibit a more pragmatic approach, often weighing the long-term value and utility of the item before making a commitment. They might also consider factors like durability and whether the purchase aligns with their financial goals. This difference in perspective often reflects the varying life experiences and priorities that each age group holds.

Discussion · Q2

How much do you believe that buying things on impulse can cause regret?

Oh, absolutely! Making impulsive purchases can often lead to a significant amount of regret. When people buy something on a whim, they might not fully consider their financial situation or whether the item truly adds value to their lives. This can especially be the case with high-ticket items, where the initial excitement can quickly dissolve into feelings of guilt or buyer's remorse. Moreover, the allure of instant gratification can overshadow the longer-term consequences, causing individuals to reflect on their decisions with a mix of regret and frustration. In essence, while spontaneity can sometimes lead to delightful surprises, more often than not, it can leave us questioning our judgment.

Discussion · Q3

How important do you think advertising is in influencing people's decisions about costly items?

I believe the impact of advertising on people's choices, particularly when it comes to expensive items, is incredibly significant. Advertisements are designed to create a sense of desire and urgency, often showcasing products in a way that makes them seem essential for a fulfilling lifestyle. This can lead individuals to make impulsive decisions, swayed by the allure of luxury and prestige associated with high-end brands. Moreover, with the rise of social media influencers, the power of suggestion has intensified, as people often look to these figures for guidance on what to purchase. Overall, advertising not only informs consumers but also shapes their perceptions and values, ultimately steering them toward certain products they might not have considered otherwise.

Discussion · Q4

Why do you think people usually feel sorry after spending a lot of money on something?

People often feel regret after splurging on expensive items for several reasons. First and foremost, there’s a strong emotional component; many individuals may purchase things driven by impulse or societal pressure, only to realize later that the item doesn’t provide the satisfaction they anticipated. Additionally, we live in a consumer-driven society where the allure of luxury can sometimes overshadow practical needs, leading to buyer’s remorse. After the initial excitement fades, people may reflect on how those funds could have been better allocated, perhaps towards experiences or savings, which can amplify feelings of regret. Ultimately, it’s a reminder of the importance of making conscious spending choices that align with our true values and desires.

Discussion · Q5

What shifts in how people buy expensive items could we expect to see in the future?

I believe we’re going to witness some fascinating shifts in consumer behavior when it comes to buying high-cost items. For one, as technology continues to advance, consumers will likely become more price-sensitive and value-oriented. They might increasingly rely on online reviews and social media influencers to guide their purchasing decisions, seeking authentic recommendations over traditional advertising. Moreover, I think we’ll see a rise in sustainable consumerism, where people are more conscious of the environmental and ethical implications of their purchases. This means that consumers might opt for high-quality, eco-friendly products, even if they come with a heftier price tag, as they want to invest in things that align with their values. All in all, these changes indicate a more informed and thoughtful approach to spending, which could reshape the market significantly.

Discussion · Q6

What actions can people take to make better choices when buying costly items?

To make more thoughtful decisions when purchasing expensive items, individuals can take several important steps. Firstly, conducting thorough research is essential; this means comparing different brands, reading reviews, and understanding the product's specifications. Additionally, setting a budget beforehand can help prevent impulsive purchases that one might regret later. It's also beneficial to consider the long-term value of the item, asking oneself if it truly meets a need or if it's merely a fleeting desire. Lastly, seeking advice from trusted friends or family can provide different perspectives, ensuring a more well-rounded decision-making process.
