Speaking test #543
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you often borrow books?
Well, I'm a bit of a bookworm, so I borrow books pretty frequently. Whether it's from the library or from a friend, I'm always on the lookout for something new to read.
Is there anything that cannot be lent?
Hmm, that's an interesting question. I suppose there are some things that can't really be lent, like one-of-a-kind items or sentimental possessions. But in general, I think most things can be borrowed if the person is willing to part with it for a while.
Have you borrowed money from a friend?
Yes, I have borrowed money from friends before. It's not something I do all the time, but sometimes you just need a little extra help to get through a tough situation. It's always nice to have friends who are willing to lend a hand.
What would you do if someone did not return what they borrowed from you?
Well, it would depend on the item and the circumstances. If it was something small and not particularly valuable, I might just let it slide. But if it was something important or sentimental, I would probably have a conversation with the person and try to work out a solution. Ultimately, I think it's important to be understanding and try to find a way to resolve the issue without damaging the relationship.
How do you plan your time in a day?
I usually like to start my day by making a to-do list. I find that it helps me prioritize my tasks and gives me a sense of direction for the day. I also like to schedule specific blocks of time for certain activities, such as work, exercise, and personal projects. I find that this helps me stay on track and be more productive.
Is it easy to manage time for you?
I would say that managing my time is relatively easy for me, as long as I am organized and have a clear idea of what needs to be done. However, there are certainly times when unexpected events or distractions can throw off my schedule. In those cases, I try to stay flexible and adjust my plans as needed.
When do you find it hard to allocate time?
I find it hardest to allocate time when I am feeling overwhelmed or stressed. When I have a lot of competing demands on my time, it can be difficult to prioritize and make decisions about how to use my time most effectively. Additionally, if I am feeling tired or unmotivated, it can be challenging to focus and be productive.
Do you like being busy?
I would say that I am a bit of a workaholic, so I generally enjoy being busy. I find that when I have a lot on my plate, I am more motivated and energized. However, I also realize the importance of taking breaks and making time for leisure activities. I try to strike a balance between being productive and taking care of myself.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe a person in the news whom you want to meet
You should say:
- Who is the person and why are they in the news?
- What do you know about this person?
- Why do you want to meet this person?
- What would you do or say if you met this person?
The person I would like to meet is Greta Thunberg, a prominent Swedish environmental activist who has gained international recognition for her passionate advocacy on climate change issues. Greta first made headlines in August 2018 when she started protesting outside the Swedish parliament, demanding stronger action to combat climate change. Since then, she has become a leading voice in the global youth movement for climate action, inspiring millions of young people around the world to take a stand for the environment.
I admire Greta not only for her unwavering commitment to raising awareness about the urgent need for climate action but also for her fearlessness in speaking truth to power. Despite facing criticism and backlash from some quarters, she continues to speak out boldly and call on world leaders to prioritize environmental sustainability. Meeting Greta would be a dream come true for me because I believe she embodies the kind of courage, determination, and activism that our world needs more of, especially in the face of the climate crisis.
If I had the opportunity to meet Greta Thunberg, I would express my deep admiration for her advocacy work and the impact she has had on mobilizing young people for climate action. I would also seek her advice on how individuals like me can contribute meaningfully to the fight against climate change in our own communities. Additionally, I would love to discuss with her the challenges she has faced and how she stays motivated despite the obstacles in her path. Overall, meeting Greta would not only be a personal honor but also a chance to learn from a truly inspirational figure who is making a difference on a global scale.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How can people see important figures differently on regular media and social media?
That's a fascinating question! The public's perception of influential figures can vary significantly between traditional media and social media platforms. In traditional media, such as newspapers and television, influencers are often portrayed through a more polished lens, presenting a curated image that may not fully reflect their true selves. This can create a sense of authority and credibility around these figures, as they are often vetted and presented by established organizations. On the flip side, social media platforms allow for a more authentic and immediate connection between influencers and their audience. Here, we often see a more relatable and raw side of these figures, which can lead to a stronger personal bond with their followers. However, this can also result in a more polarized view, as individuals may project their biases and opinions more freely. Ultimately, while traditional media tends to shape a more controlled narrative, social media empowers the public to engage with influencers on a more personal level, leading to a dynamic and evolving perception.
Why do some people feel a strong bond with famous people they haven't met?
People often feel a strong connection to public figures they have never met for a variety of reasons. For one, these individuals frequently share their personal stories, struggles, and triumphs, which can resonate deeply with fans. When people see their own experiences reflected in the lives of these public figures, it creates a sense of emotional resonance that can be quite powerful. Additionally, social media plays a huge role in this connection; it allows fans to engage with public figures on a more personal level, making them feel as though they are part of their journey. Lastly, the ideals and values that these figures represent can inspire admiration and loyalty, fostering a sense of community among their followers.
How can what a famous person does affect society overall?
The actions of a prominent individual can profoundly shape public opinion and drive social change. For instance, when a well-known figure advocates for a cause, it can spark widespread awareness and inspire others to take action, creating a ripple effect throughout society. Consider activists like Malala Yousafzai; her courage has not only brought attention to the importance of education for girls but has also motivated millions to support this cause globally. Moreover, prominent individuals often have access to platforms that allow them to reach vast audiences, making their messages more impactful. In essence, their influence can galvanize communities and even lead to significant policy changes, ultimately transforming societal norms.
Why do you think people care so much about the lives of celebrities or famous people?
I believe people are fascinated by the lives of celebrities and influential figures for a variety of reasons. Firstly, these public figures often lead glamorous lifestyles that seem unattainable to the average person, which creates an element of fantasy and escapism. Additionally, fans often feel a sense of connection or intimacy with celebrities through their work, whether it's movies, music, or social media, leading to a deep-seated curiosity about their personal lives. Moreover, in today’s digital age, the constant exposure to their lives via news and social media platforms makes it easier for fans to feel involved and informed. Ultimately, it’s a mix of admiration, aspiration, and a desire for connection that keeps people so engrossed in the world of fame.
How could the role of important people in society change in the next few years?
The role of influential figures in society is likely to evolve dramatically in the coming years, largely due to the rapid advancement of technology and the shifting dynamics of social engagement. As social media continues to dominate our lives, we might see a new breed of influencers emerging, who leverage their platforms to promote not just products, but also social causes and environmental initiatives. This shift could lead to a more engaged populace that values authenticity and accountability, expecting these figures to take a stand on pressing issues. Moreover, the rise of virtual reality and AI could also change how we perceive and interact with these influential personalities, making them more accessible yet possibly less relatable. Ultimately, I believe that while their platforms may change, the core responsibility of these figures—to inspire and drive positive change—will remain steadfast.
What actions can be taken to make sure public figures have a positive impact?
To ensure that the influence of public figures is harnessed positively, one crucial step is to promote media literacy among the public. This equips individuals, especially younger audiences, with the tools to critically evaluate the messages they receive from these figures. Additionally, public figures themselves should be encouraged to engage in social responsibility, using their platforms to advocate for important issues like climate change or mental health awareness. Collaborations between public figures and educational institutions could also be beneficial, as they could lead to initiatives that inspire and empower the youth. Ultimately, fostering an environment where accountability and positive messaging are prioritized will help to amplify the beneficial impact of such influential individuals.
