Speaking test #549
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you walk a lot?
Yes, I consider myself to be quite an avid walker. I find that it's a great way to clear my head and get some fresh air, especially when I've been sitting in front of a computer all day.
Do you walk more often now than in the past?
Yes, I do tend to walk more frequently now than I did in the past. I've become more conscious of the benefits of regular physical activity, and walking is such an easy and accessible way to stay active.
Do you think people will walk more in the future?
I certainly hope so. With the ongoing emphasis on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, I think more and more people will begin to recognize the value of regular walking as a form of exercise. Additionally, with the ongoing concerns about climate change and air pollution, I think people will also begin to appreciate the benefits of walking as a form of sustainable transportation.
Where do you usually take a walk?
I tend to take walks in a variety of different places. Sometimes I'll go for a walk in a nearby park or nature reserve, other times I'll take a walk around my neighborhood. I also like to take walks along the beach or a river if I'm near one. I find that changing up my walking routes keeps things interesting and helps to prevent boredom.
Do you use a wallet/purse?
Yes, I do use a wallet. I find it to be a convenient and practical way to keep all of my cards and cash organized.
Have you ever lost a wallet/purse?
Thankfully, I haven't lost a wallet or purse before. I am quite meticulous about keeping track of my belongings, so I always make sure to check if I have my wallet on me before I leave the house.
Have you ever sent a wallet/purse to someone as a gift?
No, I haven't. I prefer to give gifts that are more personal and thoughtful, rather than something as practical as a wallet or purse.
Do most of your friends use a wallet/purse?
I would say that most of my friends do use a wallet or purse. It's a common accessory that is used to keep important items organized and easily accessible. However, I do have a few friends who prefer to use digital wallets or carry just a minimal amount of cash on them.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Who the person was
I would like to share my experience of meeting an old friend, Ravi, after a long gap. Ravi and I first met during our college days where we were classmates in an engineering course. We shared a great bond and spent a lot of time together, creating memories that I cherished. However, after graduation, we both got busy with our respective careers and lost touch with each other.
How you knew them initially
It had been nearly five years since I last saw Ravi, so when we unexpectedly bumped into each other at a mutual friend's wedding, it was a pleasant surprise. Seeing him after such a long time brought back a rush of nostalgia and fond memories of our college days flooded my mind. It was heartwarming to catch up with him and learn about his life experiences and achievements during the years we were apart.
How long it had been since you last saw them
Meeting Ravi again was truly a special moment for me. I felt a mix of emotions - joy, nostalgia, and a sense of reconnecting with a part of my past that I had missed. It was fascinating to see how much we had both grown and changed since our college days, yet our bond and camaraderie remained intact. The reunion with Ravi reminded me of the value of long-lasting friendships and the importance of staying connected with people who have been a significant part of our lives.
How you felt about meeting them again
In conclusion, meeting Ravi again after a long time was a heartening experience that reminded me of the enduring bonds of friendship. It was a delightful reunion that filled me with happiness and gratitude, making me appreciate the memories we shared and the renewed connection we forged.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How is reconnecting with someone after a long time different from staying in touch with a friend?
Reconnecting with someone after a long time can feel like a delightful blast from the past. You often find that both of you have changed in significant ways, which can lead to surprising and enriching conversations. There’s a sense of nostalgia that comes into play, allowing you to reminisce about shared experiences and how life has unfolded since then. On the other hand, maintaining regular contact with a friend fosters a deeper understanding of their current life circumstances, creating a sense of emotional intimacy that can evolve over time. While reconnecting can be exhilarating and almost like rediscovering a long-lost treasure, keeping in touch regularly helps to build a solid foundation and ensures that the friendship remains vibrant and relevant.
Some people believe that getting back in touch with old friends is more important than making new friends. What do you think about this idea?
I completely understand why some people feel that reconnecting with old friends is more meaningful than forging new relationships. Old friends share a rich history with us; they know our quirks, our past experiences, and the journey we've taken to become who we are today. This familiarity can create a deep sense of comfort and understanding that often feels hard to replicate with new acquaintances. However, I also believe that meeting new people can be incredibly enriching. Each new friendship brings a fresh perspective and the opportunity to learn and grow in different ways. So, while old friends hold a special place in our hearts, I think both types of relationships have their unique value.
How important is it for people to keep in touch with friends from their past?
Maintaining relationships with people from our past can be incredibly significant for individuals. These connections often serve as a foundation of support and provide a sense of belonging that is hard to replicate. They remind us of our roots and the experiences that have shaped who we are today. Furthermore, these relationships can enrich our lives by offering different perspectives and insights that we might not encounter in our current circles. Ultimately, cherishing these ties can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced life, as they encourage us to reflect on our journey and growth over time.
Why do you think many people struggle to reconnect with someone they haven't met in years?
Reconnecting with someone after many years can be quite challenging for several reasons. First and foremost, there’s the passage of time, which can create a significant gap in shared experiences and memories. People change so much over the years, and it’s natural to feel a bit hesitant about reaching out to someone who might have evolved into a completely different person. Additionally, the fear of rejection can loom large; no one wants to put themselves out there only to be met with indifference. Lastly, life often gets busy, and the practicalities of modern life—like work and family commitments—can make it hard to find the right moment to reconnect, even if the desire is there. Overall, it’s a mix of emotional and logistical factors that can make such reconnections feel daunting.
How could meeting someone again after a long time be different in the future because of new technology?
The experience of reuniting with someone after a long time is likely to evolve significantly due to the rapid advancement of technology. For instance, virtual reality could enable us to have incredibly immersive reunions, making it feel as if we’re actually in the same room, despite being miles apart. Additionally, social media platforms already allow us to stay connected with friends and family, but in the future, we might even have AI-driven applications that can curate our memories and experiences together, making the reunion feel even more meaningful. Moreover, with the rise of instant communication, we can easily share our lives in real-time, which can help bridge the gap between physical reunions. Overall, while the emotional essence of reuniting may remain the same, the tools we use will undoubtedly enhance our experience and connection.
What ways do you think could help people connect with old friends more often?
To encourage people to reconnect with old friends, I believe a combination of technology and personal initiative could be highly effective. For instance, social media platforms can serve as excellent tools for rekindling those friendships; a simple message or a tagged photo can spark a conversation that might have otherwise been lost to time. Additionally, creating dedicated "friendship days" or community events where people are encouraged to invite old friends can foster a more tight-knit atmosphere. Lastly, I think personalized reminders, like calendar alerts for birthdays or anniversaries, can nudge individuals to reach out and celebrate those connections. Ultimately, it's about making that initial effort a little easier and more appealing!
