Speaking test #554
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
What kinds of advertisements do you watch?
I tend to watch advertisements that are relevant to my interests or needs. For example, if I'm in the market for a new car, I'll pay extra attention to car advertisements. I also appreciate advertisements that are well-made and creatively produced, regardless of the product being advertised.
Where can you see advertisements?
Advertisements can be seen in a variety of places, including on television, online, on billboards and posters, in newspapers and magazines, and even on the sides of buses or on the backs of receipts.
Have you ever bought something because of its advertisement?
Yes, I have definitely made purchases because of an advertisement before. Whether it's a product or a service, an effective advertisement can definitely influence my decision to make a purchase.
Do you watch advertisements from the beginning to the end?
It really depends on the advertisement. If I'm interested in the product or service being advertised, then I'll likely watch the whole thing. On the other hand, if the advertisement is not relevant to me or is poorly made, I'll probably tune it out before it's over.
How often do you take the bus?
Well, I'm pretty reliant on public transportation in general, so I take the bus fairly regularly. I'd say I probably catch a bus at least a few times a week.
When was the first time you took a taxi?
I think the first time I took a taxi was when I was visiting a new city and didn't quite know my way around. It was definitely a convenient option in that situation.
What are the advantages of taking a taxi compared with buses?
Well, taxis offer a bit more convenience, as you can usually flag them down on the street or book one in advance. They also offer a more direct route to your destination, as opposed to buses which may have multiple stops along the way. Additionally, taxis can be a good option for shorter trips or when you're in a hurry.
Is it convenient to take the bus/taxi in your city?
I would say that public transportation in my city is quite convenient overall. The buses run frequently and have a good coverage area, so it's easy to get around by bus. Taxis are also readily available, so it's never too difficult to catch a ride.

Where and when was it
I'd like to talk about my experience at the famous market in Chandni Chowk, Delhi, which I visited last year during the festive season. Chandni Chowk is renowned for its bustling streets and vibrant atmosphere, especially during festivals like Diwali. I had gone there to shop for traditional clothes and accessories for the upcoming celebrations.
Why were you there
As soon as I arrived at Chandni Chowk, I was amazed by the sheer number of people thronging the narrow lanes and busy markets. The cacophony of vendors shouting, vehicles honking, and people bargaining created a chaotic yet exhilarating ambiance. Despite feeling overwhelmed by the crowd initially, I soon found myself getting caught up in the energy of the place.
How you felt in that place
To cope with the crowd, I made sure to stay close to my friends and keep a tight grip on my belongings. Navigating through the congested lanes required patience and agility, as there were constant jostling and pushing. I also tried to maintain a positive attitude and remind myself that the experience of being in such a lively and diverse environment was truly unique and enriching.
What you did to cope with the crowd
Despite the challenges posed by the crowd, I managed to enjoy my time at Chandni Chowk by immersing myself in the vibrant sights, sounds, and smells of the market. I savored the delicious street food, marveled at the intricate handicrafts on display, and interacted with the friendly locals. Overall, my visit to this crowded place was a memorable and culturally enriching experience that I will always cherish.

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How can being in a crowded place feel different from being in a more open space?
The experience of being in a crowded place can be incredibly different from that of being in a spacious environment, and it really boils down to a few key factors. In a crowded setting, you often feel a surge of energy and excitement from the hustle and bustle, which can be quite exhilarating. However, this can also lead to feelings of overwhelm and discomfort, especially if the noise level is high and personal space is limited. On the other hand, a more spacious environment typically offers a sense of calm and tranquility, allowing individuals to relax and enjoy their surroundings without feeling rushed or pressed by others. The lack of crowding can also foster deeper connections with the environment or with companions, as there’s more room to breathe and engage in meaningful conversations. Ultimately, both experiences have their own unique charm, but they cater to different emotional and psychological needs.
Some people love being in busy places, while others feel stressed out by them. What do you think about this?
I think it's fascinating how people can experience crowded places so differently! For some, the hustle and bustle can be incredibly invigorating, bringing a sense of energy and excitement that just can't be replicated in quieter settings. I personally find that being in a vibrant crowd can really enhance my mood and inspire creativity. On the other hand, I totally understand why some people might feel overwhelmed in such environments; the noise and constant movement can be quite intimidating and stressful. Ultimately, it really comes down to individual personality and preferences, which makes our social experiences all the more diverse!
How important do you think it is for cities to have busy public spaces, like markets or parks?
I believe that crowded public spaces like marketplaces and parks are incredibly significant for cities. These areas serve as vibrant social hubs, where people from diverse backgrounds come together, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Moreover, they contribute to the city's character, providing a lively atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists. Additionally, crowded spaces can stimulate economic activity by supporting local businesses, as foot traffic often leads to increased sales. Ultimately, these public areas are essential for enhancing the quality of urban life and promoting social interaction.
Why do you think some people like being in crowded places, even if they can be uncomfortable?
I think there are a few reasons why some people are attracted to crowded environments, despite the discomfort they might bring. For many, it's about the energy and vibrancy that comes with being around others; there's a certain buzz of excitement that can be quite invigorating. Additionally, crowded places often provide a sense of community and belonging, making individuals feel connected to something larger than themselves. This is especially true in urban settings where social interactions can lead to new friendships or collaborations. Ultimately, the thrill of being part of a crowd can outweigh the temporary discomfort, creating memorable experiences that people cherish.
How could more people moving to cities affect how often places get crowded in the future?
Urbanization is a fascinating phenomenon that is reshaping our cities and lives. As more people flock to urban areas in search of better opportunities, we can expect the frequency of crowded places to increase significantly. This could lead to bustling public transport systems, packed shopping districts, and vibrant entertainment venues, all teeming with life. However, with this influx, we might also face challenges such as overcrowding and strain on infrastructure. Ultimately, while urbanization can create lively and dynamic environments, it’s crucial for city planners to ensure that these spaces remain enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
What steps can be taken to improve the experience of people in crowded places?
To enhance the experience of individuals in crowded areas, several measures can be implemented. Firstly, improving public transportation options can significantly alleviate congestion, making it easier for people to navigate busy spaces. Additionally, creating designated can encourage foot traffic while simultaneously reducing vehicle-related chaos. Implementing efficient crowd management strategies, such as real-time updates on crowd density through mobile apps, can also empower individuals to make informed decisions about when and where to go. Finally, incorporating more green spaces and seating areas can provide a much-needed respite, allowing people to relax and enjoy their surroundings amidst the hustle and bustle.
