Speaking test #570
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you often send emails?
Oh yeah, I send emails all the time. It's a pretty convenient way to communicate, especially when you're not in the same location as the person you're trying to reach.
When would you send emails to others?
I mostly send emails for work-related things, but I also send emails to friends and family. I'll send an email if I need to make plans, or if I just want to catch up with someone.
Is sending emails popular in China?
Yes, sending emails is definitely popular in China. It's a great way to keep in touch with people who are far away, and it's also a professional way to communicate in the workplace.
Do you think sending emails will be more or less popular in the future?
I think sending emails will always be popular in some way or another. Sure, newer technologies like instant messaging or social media might make it less popular, but people will still use email because it's a tried and true way of communicating.
Do you have a pet?
? Oh yeah, I have a cat named Simba. He's a total diva, but I love him all the same.
What animal is most popular in your country?
? I'd say dogs are probably the most popular animal in my country. They're just so loyal and loving, and there are so many different breeds to choose from.
Why is it so special?
? I think dogs are special because they have a special bond with their owners. They're always there for you, no matter what, and they're always ready to cuddle and play. Plus, they're just so darn cute!
What animal do you dislike most? Why?
? Hmm, I'm not sure if I dislike any animal in particular. I guess if I had to choose, it would probably be snakes. They just seem so creepy and slimy to me, and I don't like the idea of them slithering around everywhere. But that's just my personal preference, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who love snakes.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How are handmade items different from factory-made ones?
Handmade items and factory-produced goods differ significantly in several ways. Firstly, the craftsmanship involved in creating handmade items often results in a unique character and individuality that you simply can’t find in mass-produced products. Each piece tells its own story, reflecting the artisanship and personal touch of the maker. In contrast, factory items tend to focus on efficiency and uniformity, leading to a more sterile and impersonal feel. Additionally, handmade goods often use higher quality materials, which can enhance their durability and aesthetic appeal. Ultimately, while factory items may be more accessible, the charm and authenticity of handmade products can truly stand out in a world filled with mass production.
How much do you think people value homemade items in today's world?
I believe that people today have a growing appreciation for homemade items, and this trend is quite heartening. With the rise of mass production, many individuals are starting to seek out unique and authentic alternatives that reflect personal touch and creativity. Homemade items often carry a sense of sentimental value, as they are often infused with love and care, which is something that mass-produced goods simply cannot replicate. Moreover, there’s an increasing awareness of sustainability, and many consumers are opting for homemade products to support local artisans and reduce their carbon footprint. So, in many ways, homemade items are not just appreciated; they are celebrated as a return to craftsmanship in our fast-paced world.
How important is it for people to learn skills that help them make things by themselves?
Learning skills that enable individuals to create things on their own is incredibly significant, especially in today’s fast-paced world. It not only fosters a sense of independence but also promotes creativity and innovation. When people acquire these skills, they can express their ideas and passions, which can lead to a fulfilling and meaningful life. Moreover, in a society that increasingly values entrepreneurship, having the ability to create can open up numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. Ultimately, these skills empower individuals to take charge of their own narratives and contribute to their communities in unique ways.
Why do you think some people like to create things on their own instead of buying them?
I believe many people are drawn to DIY projects because they find immense satisfaction in creating something with their own hands. There’s a certain sense of accomplishment that comes from making things yourself which can be incredibly rewarding. Additionally, crafting items can be a way for individuals to express their creativity and personalize their possessions, making them feel more unique and meaningful. Moreover, some people are motivated by the desire to save money; often, homemade items can be significantly cheaper than their store-bought counterparts. Lastly, in our increasingly digital world, the act of making something tangible can be a refreshing escape, allowing individuals to reconnect with their hands-on skills and enjoy the process of creation. It's this blend of practicality, creativity, and emotional fulfillment that makes DIY so appealing!
How could the popularity of DIY projects change in the future, especially with new technology?
The trend of DIY projects is poised for an exciting evolution, particularly as technological advancements continue to shape our lives. With the rise of 3D printing and augmented reality, we may see more people engaging in DIY activities that were once limited to professionals. Imagine using AR to visualize how a piece of furniture would look in your space before you even lift a finger! Additionally, online platforms and communities are likely to flourish, providing resources and support for DIY enthusiasts. As these technologies become more accessible, I believe we'll witness a surge of creativity and innovation, transforming the DIY landscape into an even more vibrant and collaborative space.
What can communities do to get more people involved in crafting or DIY activities?
Communities can take several impactful steps to encourage more individuals to engage in crafting or DIY activities. One effective approach is to organize hands-on workshops where people can learn new skills in a fun, interactive environment. These workshops could cover a range of topics, from pottery to woodworking, allowing participants to explore their creativity. Additionally, hosting community fairs or markets can provide a platform for local artisans to showcase their work, sparking interest and inspiring others to get involved. Furthermore, establishing crafting clubs or groups can foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie, motivating members to share ideas and collaborate on projects. Overall, creating an inclusive and supportive atmosphere is key to igniting a passion for crafting in the community!
