Part 3 · Discussion

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.

Discussion · Q1

How do the traits of admired people differ from those of less famous people?

That's a fascinating question! I think the qualities of admired individuals often stand out because they tend to embody exceptional traits that resonate with a larger audience. For instance, people like activists or renowned leaders usually demonstrate a remarkable level of charisma and resilience, which can inspire others to follow their lead. In contrast, less well-known individuals might possess equally valuable qualities, but these traits often go unnoticed simply because they operate in more localized or personal contexts. Moreover, admired figures typically have a platform that amplifies their strengths, allowing them to influence society on a grand scale. This doesn’t mean that lesser-known individuals lack depth or integrity; they just might express their qualities in more subtle ways, perhaps through everyday acts of kindness or community service. Ultimately, it’s interesting to see how both types of individuals contribute to the fabric of society, albeit in different ways!

Discussion · Q2

Some people think that being famous can cause a person to lose their values. What do you think about this?

I completely agree that fame can often lead to a loss of personal integrity. When individuals are thrust into the public eye, they may feel pressured to act in ways that align with public expectations rather than their true selves. This pressure can cause them to make choices that compromise their values, as they might prioritize their public image over authenticity. Additionally, the constant scrutiny from the media can create an environment where one feels they must constantly perform, which is incredibly taxing and can lead to a sense of disconnection from who they really are. Ultimately, while fame can bring opportunities, it’s crucial for celebrities to maintain a strong sense of self to avoid losing their integrity in the process.

Discussion · Q3

How important do you think public figures are in shaping society?

The influence of public figures on society is absolutely immense. They often serve as role models, shaping public opinion and behavior through their actions and words. For instance, celebrities and athletes can inspire millions to adopt healthier lifestyles or engage in charitable work, creating a ripple effect that can lead to significant social change. Moreover, public figures have the power to raise awareness about pressing issues, such as climate change or social justice, effectively mobilizing their followers to take action. In a world driven by social media, their influence can spread like wildfire, making their impact on society not just significant, but potentially transformative.

Discussion · Q4

Why do people usually see celebrities or famous people as role models?

People often look up to celebrities or public figures as role models for a variety of reasons. First and foremost, these individuals tend to embody the aspirational qualities that many people admire, such as talent, success, and charisma. Additionally, celebrities often have a significant platform, allowing them to influence public opinion and inspire change, which can be incredibly powerful. Moreover, the media frequently highlights their achievements, making them seem more accessible and relatable, even if we know they lead vastly different lives. Ultimately, this combination of admiration, relatability, and influence contributes to the phenomenon of idolization in our society.

Discussion · Q5

How can the way people see a famous person change as time goes by?

Public perception of a well-known person can shift dramatically over time due to various factors. For instance, if a celebrity engages in controversial behavior, it can lead to a rapid decline in their popularity. Conversely, if they take part in philanthropic activities or advocate for important causes, they might experience a resurgence in public favor. Additionally, the media plays a crucial role in shaping these perceptions; a well-timed interview or positive news coverage can significantly alter how the public views someone. Ultimately, people's opinions are often influenced by a combination of personal experiences, societal norms, and media narratives, making it a fascinating and complex phenomenon.

Discussion · Q6

What steps can be taken to make sure public figures use their influence for good?

To ensure that public figures use their influence positively, it’s crucial to implement a combination of accountability and education. First off, establishing clear guidelines and standards of conduct can help set the tone for how they should behave. Moreover, providing training on social responsibility and ethical decision-making can empower them to make informed choices that benefit society. Additionally, creating platforms where the public can voice their concerns and hold these figures accountable fosters a sense of transparency and encourages positive behavior. Ultimately, a collaborative effort between the public, media, and the figures themselves can lead to a more responsible use of influence.
