Speaking test #676
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
What kinds of things do you have to bring when you go out?
Oh, well, it really depends on where I'm going and what I'll be doing. But generally speaking, I always make sure to have my phone, wallet, and keys with me. If I'm heading to work or school, I'll also grab my laptop or notebook. And if I'm going out for a day trip or something, I'll pack a water bottle and snacks.
Did you ever forget to bring something?
Yeah, absolutely. I'm definitely guilty of being forgetful sometimes. I've forgotten my phone or my keys at home before, and it's always a hassle to have to go back and get them. I've also forgotten my headphones or charger when I'm traveling, which can be a bit of a bummer.
How do you remind yourself?
I usually make a checklist of things that I need to bring with me before I leave the house. I'll put it on my phone or on a piece of paper, and I'll go through it before I head out the door. That way, I can make sure that I have everything I need before I leave.
Do you carry different things in the morning and the evening?
Not really. The things I need to bring with me are pretty consistent, no matter what time of day it is. Of course, if I'm going out for a night out or something, I might grab a different bag or bring a jacket, but for the most part, the essentials stay the same.
Do you have many close friends?
Absolutely, I'm quite blessed to have a pretty tight-knit group of buddies that I hold dear to my heart.
What do you usually do with your friends?
We're pretty adventurous and love to explore new places, whether it be a hike up a mountain or trying out a new restaurant in town. But we also enjoy some good old-fashioned hangouts at home, like movie nights or game nights.
Are you still friends with your friends from primary school?
Interestingly enough, I am still in touch with a handful of folks from my primary school days. It's always a blast catching up with them and reminiscing about old times.
Do you like chatting with your friends online?
Absolutely, I think the internet has made it so much easier to keep in touch with people, even if they're oceans away. It's great to have the ability to pop in and chat with friends anytime, anywhere.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
What are the differences between shopping in local stores and shopping in big retail chains?
Shopping experiences in local stores and large retail chains are quite distinct, each offering unique benefits and challenges. In local stores, you often find a more personalized service, where shopkeepers are familiar with their customers and can provide tailored recommendations. This creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes you feel valued as a customer. On the other hand, large retail chains usually boast a wider selection and often lower prices due to economies of scale, which can be incredibly appealing for those looking for specific products or the latest trends. However, the shopping experience can sometimes feel impersonal and overwhelming, as you’re just one of many customers. Ultimately, it often comes down to what you're shopping for and the kind of experience you prefer!
Some people think local stores offer a friendlier service. What do you think about this?
I completely agree that local shops often provide a more personal level of service compared to larger retail chains. In a small, community-oriented setting, shopkeepers tend to have a deeper understanding of their customers' preferences and needs, which fosters a sense of trust and loyalty. This personalized interaction can make shopping feel less like a transaction and more like a friendly exchange, which is truly refreshing in today's fast-paced world. Additionally, local shops often tailor their offerings to cater specifically to the tastes of the community, which enhances the overall shopping experience. So, I believe that these personal connections not only benefit customers but also contribute to a thriving local economy.
How do stores help build community connections?
Shops play a crucial role in fostering community relationships, acting as vibrant hubs where people can connect and interact. They often serve as more than just places to purchase goods; they become social gathering spots where locals can meet, share stories, and build friendships. For instance, a neighborhood café might host community events or book readings, encouraging a sense of belonging that transcends mere transactions. Additionally, local shops tend to support other businesses in the area, creating a strong sense of community and collaboration that benefits everyone involved. Overall, these interactions help to strengthen community ties and contribute to a shared identity among residents.
Why do you think some people like certain stores more than others?
People often develop a preference for certain stores due to a combination of factors like brand loyalty, personal experiences, and the overall shopping atmosphere. For instance, if someone has consistently found high-quality products and excellent customer service at a particular store, they are likely to return there time and again. Additionally, the ambiance of a store can greatly influence shopping habits; a welcoming and aesthetically pleasing environment can make customers feel more relaxed and valued. Finally, convenience also plays a significant role; if a store is easily accessible or offers a diverse range of products, it becomes a go-to choice for many shoppers.
How could shopping change in the next ten years?
The shopping landscape is poised for some significant transformations over the next decade, largely driven by advancements in technology and shifting consumer behaviors. We can expect to see a further rise in e-commerce, with online shopping becoming even more seamless and integrated into our daily lives. Augmented reality and virtual reality might revolutionize how we experience retail, allowing customers to try products from the comfort of their homes. Additionally, sustainability will likely play a pivotal role, with consumers increasingly opting for brands that prioritize eco-friendly practices. Overall, the future of shopping will probably be a fascinating blend of convenience, technology, and conscious consumerism!
What can be done to get more people to help local businesses?
To encourage more people to support local businesses, a multifaceted approach can be highly effective. Firstly, communities could initiate awareness campaigns that highlight the unique products and services available locally, showcasing their quality and the stories behind them. Additionally, local governments might consider offering incentives such as tax breaks or grants for small businesses, which can help them thrive and attract more customers. Organizing community events like farmers' markets or local fairs can also create a vibrant atmosphere that draws people in and fosters a sense of camaraderie among residents. Ultimately, it’s about cultivating a culture of support where people feel proud to contribute to their local economy.
