Part 3 · Discussion

4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.

Discussion · Q1

How do personal successes affect a person's self-esteem compared to job achievements?

Personal achievements and professional accomplishments both play significant roles in shaping an individual’s self-esteem, but they often do so in different ways. Personal achievements, such as overcoming a personal challenge or pursuing a passion, can cultivate a deep sense of fulfillment and self-worth. They often resonate more emotionally because they are tied to our core values and desires, giving us a sense of identity and purpose. On the other hand, professional accomplishments, like promotions or accolades, often come with external validation, which can boost our confidence in the workplace and enhance our social status. Ultimately, while both types of achievements are important, personal victories tend to foster a more profound sense of self, while professional successes can bolster our perceived value in society.

Discussion · Q2

Some people think personal achievements matter more than work ones. How could someone see this in another way?

That's such an interesting question! While many people indeed cherish personal milestones like weddings or the birth of a child as pivotal moments in their lives, others might argue that professional achievements hold equal or even greater significance. For instance, landing a dream job or achieving a long-sought promotion can dramatically impact one’s life, providing not only financial stability but also a sense of fulfillment and purpose. Additionally, in today’s world, where career success is often linked to personal identity, some individuals may find that their professional milestones contribute significantly to their overall happiness and self-worth. Ultimately, it’s all about perspective; what resonates as meaningful can vary greatly from person to person.

Discussion · Q3

How important do you think it is for people to engage in activities that bring them pride and happiness?

I believe it’s absolutely crucial for individuals to engage in activities that foster personal pride and fulfillment. When people invest time in pursuits that resonate with their passions, it not only enhances their overall well-being but also contributes to a more balanced life. For instance, hobbies or volunteer work can bring a sense of achievement and connection, which is incredibly rewarding. Moreover, these activities can also cultivate valuable skills and relationships, enriching one’s life in ways that go beyond just personal satisfaction. In today’s fast-paced world, taking the time to nurture what makes us feel fulfilled can truly make a difference in our mental and emotional health.

Discussion · Q4

Why do you think people usually look for approval from their successes?

People often seek validation from their achievements because it provides a sense of self-worth and reinforces their identity. In a world where comparisons are rampant, individuals may feel the need to measure their success against societal standards or peer accomplishments. Achievements can serve as tangible proof of hard work and dedication, making it easier for people to gain recognition and respect from others. Furthermore, this validation can foster a sense of belonging, as sharing accomplishments often leads to connection and support from friends and family. Ultimately, seeking validation can be a natural human instinct, driving individuals to strive for excellence and personal growth.

Discussion · Q5

What differences could happen in society if more people concentrated on their own achievements instead of what society expects?

If more individuals began to prioritize their personal accomplishments over societal expectations, I believe we’d witness a profound shift in the dynamics of society. For one, people might feel a greater sense of self-fulfillment, which could lead to increased happiness and overall well-being. This shift could foster a culture of creativity and innovation, as individuals would be more likely to pursue their passions and think outside the box, rather than conforming to traditional paths. Moreover, there might be a reduction in the pressure to «keep up with the Joneses,» as individuals would be less concerned about meeting societal benchmarks. This could ultimately result in a more diverse range of careers and lifestyles, enriching our communities with varying perspectives and talents. Overall, focusing on personal accomplishments could cultivate a more authentic society, where people are empowered to chase their dreams without the weight of external expectations.

Discussion · Q6

What can someone do to feel proud in their daily life?

Cultivating a sense of pride in everyday life can be incredibly rewarding and is often rooted in simple yet meaningful actions. First, setting and achieving personal goals, no matter how small, can instill a sense of accomplishment. Additionally, engaging in daily practices such as gratitude journaling can shift one’s perspective, allowing individuals to recognize and appreciate their achievements. Connecting with one’s community through volunteering or supporting local initiatives can also enhance feelings of belonging and pride. Ultimately, embracing a mindset of continuous improvement, where one celebrates progress rather than perfection, can foster a more profound sense of pride in daily endeavors.
