Speaking test #719
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like robots?
I absolutely adore robots! The idea of having machines that can perform tasks, interact with humans, and even think for themselves is truly fascinating to me. I find the technology behind robots to be incredibly impressive and I am always excited to see new advancements in the field.
Would you want a robot to work in your home?
I would definitely consider having a robot work in my home. With the increasing need for automation and efficiency, having a robot to assist with tasks such as cleaning, cooking, and even taking care of children could greatly improve the quality of life for many households. Plus, the thought of having a robot butler is quite appealing to me.
What do you think about a robot driving your car?
I think the concept of a robot driving a car is very intriguing. With the advancements in technology, it is becoming increasingly possible to have self-driving cars on the roads. The idea of having a robot drive your car could greatly improve safety and reduce the number of accidents caused by human error. However, I do think there will be a lot of challenges to overcome before this becomes a reality.
Will robots replace human beings in the workplace completely?
I don't believe that robots will replace human beings in the workplace completely. While automation and technology can certainly improve efficiency and productivity, there are certain tasks that require human intuition and creativity. Additionally, many jobs require human interaction and emotional intelligence, which robots may not be able to replicate. However, I do think that robots will become increasingly prevalent in the workplace and will change the way we work.
Do you like running?
Oh, absolutely! I absolutely love running. It's such a great way to clear my head and get some exercise in. Plus, there's nothing quite like the feeling of crossing the finish line after a long run.
How often do you go for a run?
I try to go for a run at least three times a week. Sometimes it's a little difficult to fit it into my schedule, but I always make sure to make time for it.
Where do you usually go running?
I usually go running in the park near my house. It's a beautiful area with lots of trees and a nice path to run on. I also like to mix it up and run on the beach or on a trail in the mountains.
Would you continue running in the future?
Definitely! Running is such an important part of my life and I can't imagine ever giving it up. It's not only good for my physical health but also for my mental well-being. I plan on continuing to run for as long as I can.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
Describe a person you know who gave a clever solution to a problem
You should say:
- Who the person is
- What the problem was
- How the person came up with the solution
- Why you think the solution was clever
Who the person is
I would like to talk about my colleague, Ravi, who I believe gave a remarkably clever solution to a problem we faced at work last month. Ravi is a software engineer in our team, known for his logical thinking and innovative approach to challenges.
What the problem was
The problem we encountered was a critical bug in our software system that was causing frequent crashes and errors, leading to a lot of frustration among the team and affecting our project deadline. Despite trying various conventional approaches, we were unable to pinpoint the exact source of the issue.
How the person came up with the solution
Ravi, known for his out-of-the-box thinking, decided to take a step back and analyze the problem from a different perspective. Instead of focusing solely on the software code, he suggested examining the hardware components that interacted with the system. Through his thorough investigation, he discovered a minor compatibility issue between the software and a specific hardware device, which was causing the crashes.
Why you think the solution was clever
I find Ravi's solution particularly clever because it showcased his ability to think beyond the obvious and consider all possible factors contributing to the problem. By looking at the issue holistically and not limiting himself to traditional troubleshooting methods, he was able to identify a unique solution that ultimately resolved the bug. Ravi's innovative approach not only saved us valuable time but also highlighted the importance of thinking creatively when faced with complex challenges.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How do people who create new ideas differ from those who use old methods?
Individuals who come up with innovative solutions tend to possess a more flexible mindset, allowing them to challenge the status quo and think outside the box. They often embrace risk and uncertainty, viewing them as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles. In contrast, those who rely on traditional methods typically prefer to stick with established practices, often valuing stability and predictability over experimentation. This difference in approach can lead to a significant divergence in outcomes; while traditionalists may achieve consistent results, innovators might discover groundbreaking ideas that can revolutionize processes or products. Ultimately, both perspectives are valuable, but it’s the willingness to adapt and innovate that often sets apart those who drive progress.
How much do you believe creativity helps in solving daily problems?
Creativity plays an incredibly significant role in tackling everyday challenges. It allows us to approach problems from different angles and come up with innovative solutions that might not be immediately apparent. For instance, when faced with a common issue like time management, a creative person might develop a unique scheduling system or utilize technology in a way that maximizes efficiency. Moreover, creativity fosters adaptability, enabling individuals to pivot and reassess situations, which is essential in our fast-paced world. Ultimately, embracing creativity can transform mundane challenges into opportunities for growth and improvement.
How important is it for people to learn problem-solving skills in today's quick-moving world?
In today's fast-paced world, developing problem-solving skills is absolutely crucial. With the constant barrage of challenges that we face—whether in our personal lives or professional environments—having the ability to think critically and creatively can make a significant difference. These skills not only enhance our ability to navigate unexpected situations but also empower us to make informed decisions quickly. Moreover, as technology continues to evolve, being adept at problem-solving allows individuals to adapt and thrive amidst change. In essence, fostering these skills can lead to greater resilience and success in an increasingly complex landscape.
Why do people often find it hard to think creatively when they face problems?
Thinking outside the box can be quite a challenge for many people, especially when they’re confronted with difficulties. One reason for this is that individuals often become overwhelmed by stress or pressure, which can cloud their judgment and stifle creativity. Additionally, societal norms and past experiences can create a framework that limits one’s ability to explore unconventional solutions. When people are accustomed to following established paths, stepping away from those can feel risky or even daunting. Ultimately, it takes a certain level of courage and an open mindset to break free from conventional thinking and embrace innovation.
How could the way we solve problems change in the future as technology keeps improving?
As technology continues to evolve, I believe the approach to problem-solving will become increasingly data-driven. With advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning, we will likely see a shift toward utilizing vast amounts of data to identify patterns and solutions that humans might overlook. Additionally, collaboration tools will enable global teamwork in real-time, allowing diverse perspectives to come together to tackle complex issues. This could lead to more innovative solutions, as different cultural and professional backgrounds contribute to a richer pool of ideas. Overall, the future of problem-solving promises to be more efficient and inclusive, harnessing the power of technology to address challenges more effectively than ever before.
What ways can we use to help people think more creatively when they face challenges?
To foster more creative thinking when individuals face obstacles, a variety of strategies can be employed. Firstly, creating an open-minded environment is crucial; this involves encouraging people to share their ideas without fear of criticism. Workshops or brainstorming sessions can facilitate this by allowing individuals to bounce ideas off each other, leading to unexpected solutions. Additionally, incorporating mindfulness practices can help clear mental blocks, enabling a more fluid thought process. Lastly, embracing failure as a learning opportunity rather than a setback can significantly shift one’s perspective, making them more willing to explore unconventional routes when tackling challenges.
