Speaking test #757
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like chocolate? [Why / why not?
?] Oh absolutely, I'm a total chocoholic. There's just something about the rich, creamy taste that I can't resist. Plus, it's a great way to satisfy my sweet tooth.
What type of chocolate do you prefer? [Why?
?] I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so I tend to go for the really dark, rich chocolate. I find that it has a more intense flavor and it's less sweet, which I really enjoy. Plus, it's supposed to be healthier for you, so that's always a bonus.
When do you usually eat chocolate?
I don't really have a specific time when I eat chocolate. I pretty much enjoy it anytime, anywhere. Sometimes I'll have a little piece as a pick-me-up in the afternoon, or I'll have a little square as a dessert after dinner. It's just one of those things that's always good to have on hand.
Do people give chocolate as a present in your country? [When?
?] Yes, chocolate is definitely a popular gift in my country. It's a classic present for Valentine's Day, birthdays, and Christmas, and it's also a common gift for saying thank you or congratulating someone. Chocolate is just one of those things that always seems to put a smile on people's faces.
Do you like the city you are living in now? [Why?
?] Oh yeah, absolutely! I mean, it's not perfect by any means, but it's definitely got its charms. For one thing, it's got a really vibrant arts scene - there are always concerts and exhibitions and stuff like that happening, which I really enjoy. Plus, it's just really convenient for getting around - the public transport system is pretty efficient, and there's always a ton of stuff to do and see.
Do you prefer the city or the countryside? [Why?
?] That's a tough one. I think I could go either way, really. On the one hand, I love the fast-paced, energetic vibe of the city - there's always something going on, and I really thrive on that kind of energy. On the other hand, though, I also really appreciate the peace and quiet of the countryside. It's just so relaxing to be surrounded by all that open space and nature. I guess it just depends on my mood, really.
What kinds of city do you like? [Why?
?] I think I'm most drawn to cities that have a really unique character and sense of identity. Like, I love places that are really steeped in history and culture, and that have a really strong local community. I also really enjoy cities that are really diverse and multicultural - I find it really interesting to see how different cultures and traditions intersect and influence each other. Overall, I think it's just really important for a city to have a strong sense of place and identity.
Which city do you want to go to? [Why?
?] There are so many cities that I'd love to visit! Right now, I'm particularly interested in exploring more of Asia - I've always been fascinated by the different cultures and histories of the region, and there are so many amazing cities to explore. In particular, I'd love to visit Tokyo - I've heard that it's such a vibrant, dynamic city, with a really unique blend of traditional and modern elements. I'd also love to visit Seoul and Hong Kong - I think they'd both be really interesting to explore, with their own distinct identities and cultures.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How is the experience of going to a favorite place different for each person?
The experience of visiting a favorite place can be profoundly different for each individual, and that’s what makes it so fascinating! For some, it might evoke a sense of nostalgia, reminding them of childhood memories or significant life events. For others, it may be a place of breathtaking beauty, where the natural surroundings inspire a feeling of peace and tranquility. Additionally, personal preferences play a huge role; someone might find joy in the buzzing atmosphere of a city, while another person might prefer the solitude of a quiet beach. Ultimately, it’s the unique combination of personal history, emotions, and expectations that shapes each person's experience, making it truly special.
What are some reasons people have different opinions about their favorite places?
People often have contrasting opinions about their preferred locations due to a variety of factors, and it’s fascinating to see how personal experiences shape our preferences. For instance, someone might cherish the hustle and bustle of a big city because it offers a vibrant social scene and countless opportunities, while another might find solace in the tranquility of the countryside, valuing nature and peace over urban excitement. Additionally, cultural background can play a significant role; individuals who grew up in rural areas may feel more at home in similar settings, while those from urban environments might thrive in a metropolitan landscape. Ultimately, these differing perspectives highlight how our personal experiences and cultural influences can lead to diverse opinions about what makes a location ideal.
How do you think going to places we enjoy helps our well-being?
Visiting places that we cherish can have a profound impact on our overall well-being. Firstly, being in environments that resonate with us can significantly boost our mood and reduce stress levels. When we immerse ourselves in familiar and beloved locations, it often triggers positive memories and feelings, creating a sense of emotional rejuvenation. Additionally, these experiences can foster connections with others, whether it’s sharing a favorite spot with friends or meeting new people who share similar interests, which can enhance our social well-being. Ultimately, these visits provide a wonderful opportunity to disconnect from the daily grind and reconnect with what truly matters to us, making it an invaluable aspect of a balanced life.
Why do people usually feel strong emotions about certain places they have been to?
People often form strong emotional connections to specific places because these locations are tied to significant memories and experiences. For instance, a childhood vacation spot might evoke feelings of nostalgia, reminding someone of carefree days and family bonding. Additionally, certain places may symbolize life-changing events, such as graduations or weddings, which deepens the emotional attachment. The sensory elements—like the sights, sounds, and even smells—can also trigger powerful memories, making those places feel almost like a second home. Ultimately, it’s this blend of personal history and sensory experience that creates a lasting bond between individuals and the places they've visited.
How can the meaning of a favorite place change as a person experiences different life stages?
That's a fascinating question! As we go through various stages of life, the significance of a beloved location can evolve dramatically. For instance, a childhood playground might hold cherished memories of carefree days and innocent joy, but as we grow older, that same place might transform into a nostalgic reminder of simpler times. In our teenage years, we might associate it with friendships and budding independence, while in adulthood, we might revisit it for reflection or to share those memories with our own children. Ultimately, the emotional connections and the context in which we experience these locations can shift, making them resonate differently as we navigate life's journey. It's amazing how a physical space can encapsulate so many layers of our personal history!
What can be done to improve the experience of visitors at popular places?
To enhance the experience of visitors in popular destinations, I believe there are several strategies that could be implemented. First and foremost, infrastructure improvements such as better public transportation and more accessible facilities can make a huge difference. Additionally, providing more localized experiences—like guided tours by locals—can help tourists connect with the culture on a deeper level. It's also essential to promote sustainable tourism practices, which not only protect the environment but also ensure that the destinations remain vibrant and appealing for future generations. Finally, leveraging technology, like virtual reality experiences or interactive apps, can offer visitors a unique and engaging way to explore these areas.
