Speaking test #829
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Do you like to wear special costumes?
I absolutely adore wearing special costumes! Whether it's for Halloween, a themed party, or even just for fun, I find that costumes give me the opportunity to express myself in unique and creative ways. Plus, it's always so much fun to see how others react to my costumes and to see the different costumes that others are wearing as well.
Did you try any special costumes when you were young?
Yes, I definitely did! When I was a kid, I loved dressing up as my favorite characters from books and movies. I remember spending hours putting together costumes for Halloween and other events, and I always had a blast showing them off to my friends and family. I think that's when my love for costumes first began.
When was the last time you wore special costumes?
The last time I wore a special costume was actually just a few weeks ago. I participated in a themed party where the dress code was "Wild West," so I put together a costume inspired by the classic western movies. I had a blast dressing up as a cowboy and getting into character for the party.
Did you ever buy special costumes?
Yes, I have definitely bought special costumes before. I've purchased costumes for Halloween, themed parties, and even for cosplay events. I find that buying costumes is a great way to ensure that I have a unique and high-quality costume for the event, and it can also save me time and effort in putting together a costume on my own.
What do you most enjoy doing with other people?
I absolutely love exploring new places and trying new things with my friends. Whether it's going on a hike, trying a new restaurant, or even just going for a walk in a new neighborhood, I find that the experience is always so much more enjoyable when I'm with other people. I think it's because we can share in the excitement and discovery together, and it makes everything more memorable.
Do you prefer studying with other people or on your own?
I definitely prefer studying with other people. I find that when I'm working on a difficult assignment or trying to understand a complex concept, having someone else to bounce ideas off of and ask questions of is incredibly valuable. Plus, working in a group can be a lot more fun and motivating than working alone.
Would you like a job that involves working with a lot of people?
Absolutely! I thrive in environments where I'm constantly interacting with others, and I think that a job that involves working with a lot of people would be incredibly fulfilling for me. I love the energy and creativity that comes from working with a team, and I think that being around other people would help me to stay motivated and engaged in my work.
Do you have enough time for doing things with your friends?
I try my best to make time for my friends, but sometimes it can be difficult. I work a lot and I have a lot of other responsibilities, so it can be hard to find the time to hang out with my friends as much as I'd like. But I always make sure to prioritize my relationships with my friends, and I try to make sure that I'm always making time for the people that are most important to me.

Describe an occasion when you waited for someone
You should say:
- Who you were waiting for
- Where you were waiting
- How long you had to wait
- How you felt during the wait
Who you were waiting for
Waiting for someone is a common occurrence in our daily lives, and I vividly recall a time when I eagerly awaited the arrival of my best friend at a local coffee shop in my hometown. My friend, Aisha, who I hadn't seen in months due to her busy schedule, had promised to meet me at our favorite coffee spot for a long-overdue catch-up session.
Where you were waiting
I chose a cozy corner table at the coffee shop where Aisha and I had spent countless hours during our college days, reminiscing and sharing stories. The familiar surroundings and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee added to my anticipation as I eagerly awaited Aisha's arrival.
How long you had to wait
As minutes turned into what seemed like hours, I found myself checking my phone frequently for any messages or calls from Aisha, hoping for an update on her whereabouts. Despite the passing time, my excitement to see her after so long kept me in good spirits, and I used the waiting time to reflect on our cherished memories together.
How you felt during the wait
Finally, when Aisha walked through the doors of the coffee shop, a wave of relief and joy washed over me. The wait was instantly worth it as we hugged and settled down to catch up on each other's lives. The happiness of being reunited with a dear friend after a long wait made the experience even more special and memorable.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
How do waiting experiences change between friends and work commitments?
That’s an interesting question! When it comes to waiting experiences, I think they can feel quite different depending on whether you’re with friends or in a professional setting. With friends, waiting often feels more relaxed and casual; you might share jokes or chat about your day, which can turn an otherwise boring wait into a fun bonding experience. On the other hand, in a professional environment, waiting can feel much more tense and formal. You might be anxiously checking your watch, concerned about making a good impression or adhering to a schedule. Overall, the emotional context really shapes how we perceive waiting, making it either a delightful moment with friends or a nerve-wracking one in a work setting.
Some people think waiting is annoying, while others view it as a chance to think. What do you think about this?
I believe that waiting can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can indeed be quite frustrating, especially in our fast-paced society where we’re always looking to maximize our time. However, I think there’s a hidden beauty in waiting. It offers a unique opportunity for self-reflection and contemplation, allowing us to pause and think about our priorities or even to brainstorm ideas. Personally, I've found that some of my best insights come during those moments of stillness, so I try to embrace waiting as a chance to recharge and gain perspective.
How important is patience in our everyday lives, especially in social situations?
Patience plays a truly crucial role in our daily lives, especially in social situations where emotions can run high. When we interact with others, whether it’s during a disagreement or simply in a busy environment, having the ability to remain calm can make all the difference. It allows for better communication, as we are more likely to listen actively and respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. Moreover, patience fosters stronger relationships, as it shows that we value the other person's perspective and are willing to invest time in understanding them. Ultimately, cultivating patience can lead to a more harmonious and fulfilling social life, enhancing our connections with those around us.
Why do you think some people can wait more easily than others?
That's an intriguing question! I believe the ability to wait often hinges on a person's emotional resilience and their outlook on life. Some individuals are naturally more patient and see waiting as a part of the journey, while others might view it as a source of frustration. Additionally, those who practice mindfulness or have a clear goal in mind tend to cope better with waiting times, as they can focus on the positives rather than the inconvenience. Finally, cultural factors also play a role; in some cultures, waiting is regarded as a virtue, which shapes how individuals respond to delays in their daily lives.
How could waiting feel different in the future because of new technology?
The experience of waiting is likely to undergo a significant transformation as technology continues to advance. For instance, we’re already seeing the emergence of real-time updates through apps that keep us informed about our place in line or the status of our deliveries. In the near future, I can envision even more sophisticated solutions, such as virtual reality environments that allow us to immerse ourselves in engaging activities while we wait, making the time feel less burdensome. Additionally, artificial intelligence could streamline processes, reducing the amount of time we actually need to wait in the first place. Overall, these innovations could turn waiting from a frustrating experience into a more productive and enjoyable one.
What ways can people find to make waiting easier in different situations?
There are several effective methods people can use to make waiting more tolerable, regardless of the situation. One popular approach is to engage in mindful activities, like deep breathing or meditation, which can help reduce anxiety and create a sense of calm. Additionally, many individuals turn to their smartphones to pass the time—whether it’s scrolling through social media, playing games, or catching up on podcasts. Another great option is to bring along a good book or listen to an audiobook, which can completely immerse you and make the wait feel much shorter. Ultimately, finding something enjoyable to do can transform an otherwise tedious wait into a more pleasant experience!
