Speaking test #839
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
How often do you make telephone calls?
I make telephone calls quite frequently, probably on a daily basis. I would say that I make around 3-4 calls a day on average.
Who do you spend the most time talking to on the telephone?
I spend the most time talking to my family and close friends on the telephone. I try to stay in touch with them as much as possible and make sure to catch up with them regularly.
When do you think you’ll next make a telephone call?
I think I'll next make a telephone call later today, as I usually call my parents in the evening to check in with them and see how their day went.
Do you sometimes prefer to send a text message instead of telephoning?
Yes, I do prefer to send text messages instead of telephoning in certain situations. For example, if I need to quickly convey a short message or if I'm in a noisy or crowded place, I find that sending a text message is more convenient and efficient. Additionally, it allows me to communicate with people in different time zones, as they can respond to the message at their convenience.
What kind of entertainment do you prefer, TV or radio?
I would have to say that I prefer TV over radio. I find that the visual aspect of television adds an extra layer of engagement and immersion to the content that I am watching. However, I do appreciate the convenience and simplicity of listening to the radio, especially when I am on the go or doing other tasks.
How are radio programs and television programs different?
Well, one of the most obvious differences between radio programs and television programs is the presence of visual elements on television. Television programs also tend to be more elaborate in terms of production value and special effects, whereas radio programs rely solely on audio to convey their message. Additionally, television programs often have a wider range of genres and formats, such as dramas, comedies, and reality shows, whereas radio programs tend to be more limited in this regard.
What programs do you like to listen/watch?
I enjoy watching a variety of programs, but some of my favorites include crime dramas, comedies, and reality shows. I also enjoy watching documentaries and current affairs programs to stay informed about what is happening in the world. In terms of radio programs, I enjoy listening to music and talk shows, as well as news and weather updates.
Do you prefer TV news or news on the radio?
I would have to say that I prefer TV news over news on the radio. I find that the visuals and graphics used in TV news broadcasts help to better convey the information and give me a better understanding of the events that are being reported. Additionally, I find that TV news programs often provide more in-depth coverage and analysis of the stories they are reporting on. However, I do appreciate the convenience and immediacy of listening to news updates on the radio when I am on the go or away from a TV.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Part 3 · Discussion
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks broader questions linked to the cue card topic.
What are the differences between the qualities of a perfect home and a regular house?
That's a fascinating question! An ideal home often embodies a sense of personalization that goes beyond the traditional aspects of a conventional house. For instance, while a conventional house typically emphasizes functionality and aesthetic appeal, an ideal home would prioritize comfort and emotional resonance. Features like open spaces, natural lighting, and eco-friendly materials are often more prevalent in ideal homes, reflecting a growing awareness of sustainability. Moreover, an ideal home tends to foster a sense of community, with shared spaces that encourage interaction, whereas conventional houses might focus more on privacy. Ultimately, the differences lie in how the spaces are designed to enhance both lifestyle and well-being.
"Some people think that where a house is located matters more than how it looks. Why might they believe this?"?
That's a fascinating question! Many people argue that the location of a home is paramount because it can significantly influence one’s quality of life. For instance, living in a vibrant neighborhood with easy access to schools, parks, and public transport can enhance daily living, making it more convenient and enjoyable. Additionally, a prime location often correlates with higher property values, which can be a wise investment choice for homeowners. While a well-designed home can certainly elevate comfort and aesthetics, if it's situated in a less desirable area, it might not be as appealing in the long run. Ultimately, the balance between location and design will often depend on personal priorities and lifestyle preferences, but it's clear that location holds a strong sway in this debate!
How does personal space affect a person's well-being?
Personal space plays a crucial role in an individual's overall well-being, as it significantly affects both mental and emotional health. When people have adequate personal space, they often experience a sense of security and comfort, which can lead to reduced stress levels. This space allows individuals to recharge and reflect, fostering a deeper sense of self-awareness. On the other hand, when personal space is compromised, it can lead to feelings of discomfort and anxiety, ultimately impacting one’s interpersonal relationships. In essence, having a designated personal space is fundamental for maintaining a healthy balance in our hectic lives, enabling us to connect with others while also preserving our individuality.
Why does a home need to show the personality and lifestyle of the people living in it?
It's crucial for a home to reflect the personality and lifestyle of its occupants because it creates a sense of belonging and comfort. When a space is tailored to one’s tastes, it not only enhances the overall atmosphere but also fosters emotional well-being. For instance, a home that showcases personal interests, such as art collections or travel memorabilia, can serve as a daily reminder of cherished memories and passions. Additionally, a personalized environment can stimulate creativity and productivity, making it easier for individuals to thrive in their day-to-day lives. Ultimately, a home that resonates with its occupants can be a sanctuary, providing both peace and inspiration.
"What changes in housing choices might we see in the future as cities grow?"?
As urbanization continues to accelerate, I believe we will witness significant shifts in housing preferences. Firstly, there will likely be a growing demand for compact living spaces, as more people flock to cities for opportunities. This could lead to an increase in innovative designs like micro-apartments or co-living arrangements, which maximize functionality while minimizing space. Additionally, sustainability will play a crucial role in future housing choices, with individuals gravitating towards eco-friendly homes that incorporate renewable energy sources and green materials. Lastly, proximity to essential amenities and public transport will become increasingly important, as urban dwellers seek to balance their busy lifestyles with convenience. Overall, I think these trends will reflect a more conscious and connected urban lifestyle.
What steps can communities take to make sure everyone can get good housing?
To ensure that everyone has access to quality housing, communities can implement a variety of measures. Firstly, local governments could introduce affordable housing initiatives that provide incentives for developers to build low-cost housing projects. This not only increases the availability of homes but also helps to maintain a diverse community. Additionally, community engagement is crucial; by involving residents in the planning process, we can better understand their needs and priorities, leading to more effective solutions. Moreover, partnerships with non-profit organizations can help to secure funding and resources, making it easier to tackle housing shortages. Overall, a collaborative approach is essential for creating sustainable and inclusive housing solutions.
