Speaking test #849
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
Have you done water sports?
Yes, I have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of water sports in the past. I have dabbled in activities such as surfing, kayaking, and stand-up paddleboarding. Each of these experiences has been incredibly exhilarating and challenging in their own unique ways.
What other water sports would you like to try?
I am particularly interested in trying out water sports such as kiteboarding and windsurfing. I find the idea of harnessing the power of the wind to propel oneself across the water to be a fascinating concept. Additionally, I would also like to try my hand at scuba diving. I have always been fascinated by the underwater world and would love to explore it more intimately.
Do you think water sports are dangerous?
Water sports can certainly be dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. However, I believe that with the right training, equipment, and mindset, most water sports can be enjoyed safely. It is important to always be aware of one's surroundings and to have a healthy respect for the power of the water.
What kind of water sports do people in your (this) country like?
In my country, people tend to enjoy a wide variety of water sports. Popular activities include swimming, boating, jet skiing, and water skiing. Additionally, many people also enjoy more extreme sports such as wakeboarding and kitesurfing. The country's coastlines and rivers provide ample opportunities for people to engage in these activities.
Does the weather change a lot in your country?
The weather in my country can be quite variable. We experience a wide range of temperatures and precipitation levels throughout the year. For example, in the summer, temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius, while in the winter, they can drop to below freezing. Additionally, we have a monsoon season that brings heavy rains for several months of the year. Overall, I would say that the weather does change quite a bit in my country.
What is your favorite kind of weather?
Personally, I am a big fan of mild, sunny weather. I enjoy temperatures in the mid-20s and clear blue skies. I find that this type of weather is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking or spending time at the beach. Additionally, I find that I am more productive and energized when the weather is sunny and bright.
Would you like to live in a place that has very different weather from your country?
I think it would be interesting to live in a place with vastly different weather from my country. For example, I would be curious to experience the four distinct seasons of a place like Canada or the United States. I think it would be an exciting change of pace to experience snow and ice in the winter, and warm sunshine in the summer. However, I do value the warmth and sunshine of my current home, so I would have to weigh the pros and cons of living in a place with different weather.
Do you think people feel happier living in countries where the weather is always sunny?
I think that people's happiness can be affected by many factors, and weather is just one of them. While it is true that sunny weather can boost one's mood, I believe that people's happiness is largely influenced by their personal circumstances, such as their relationships, job, and overall quality of life. Additionally, I think that people can adapt and find happiness in a variety of weather conditions. So, I don't think that living in a country with always sunny weather is a guarantee for happiness.

How can ideas of beauty vary between different cultures?
Societal standards of beauty can vary immensely across different cultures, and this diversity is fascinating! For instance, in some Western cultures, a lean physique is often celebrated, while in many African and some Pacific Island cultures, a fuller body may be seen as a symbol of wealth and fertility. Additionally, the importance placed on features like skin tone or hair texture can differ significantly; in certain Asian cultures, lighter skin is often idealized, whereas, in others, a sun-kissed glow might be more desirable. This rich tapestry of beauty standards not only reflects cultural values but also influences fashion, media representation, and even personal identity. It’s a reminder that beauty is truly subjective and shaped by a myriad of factors, including history and social dynamics.
How much do you believe looks affect personal relationships?
Physical appearance undoubtedly plays a significant role in shaping personal relationships, especially in the initial stages of attraction. People often make snap judgments based on looks, which can lead to either connections or missed opportunities. However, as relationships develop, deeper qualities such as personality, shared values, and emotional chemistry become increasingly important. It's fascinating to see how some individuals might initially be drawn to someone's physical attributes, but over time, it's often the inner qualities that truly solidify a bond. So, while appearance can open doors, it’s the genuine connection that ultimately keeps them open!
How important do you think looks are for doing well at work?
Attractiveness can undoubtedly play a significant role in professional success, though it shouldn't be the sole determinant. People often make snap judgments based on first impressions, and those who are perceived as more attractive may find it easier to establish rapport and gain trust. However, it's essential to recognize that skills, competence, and work ethic ultimately hold more weight in the long run. That said, attractiveness can sometimes open doors, creating opportunities that might not be available otherwise. In a competitive job market, a combination of personal appeal and professional skills can certainly give individuals an edge.
Why do you think a lot of people care so much about looks?
I believe many people place a high value on physical beauty due to a combination of societal influences and evolutionary instincts. From a young age, we are bombarded with images of idealized beauty in media, which shapes our perceptions and aspirations. This can lead to the notion that those who are physically attractive are also more successful or happier, creating a strong societal pressure to conform to these standards. Additionally, there's an evolutionary perspective that suggests we are naturally inclined to find certain features appealing as they can signify health and vitality. Ultimately, while it's crucial to appreciate inner qualities, the emphasis on physical beauty remains deeply ingrained in our culture.
How could the way we see beauty change in the future because of social media?
The perception of beauty is likely to undergo significant transformation as social media continues to play a pivotal role in our lives. With the rise of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, beauty standards are becoming increasingly diverse and inclusive, showcasing a broader range of body types, skin tones, and styles. This democratization of beauty means that people are beginning to appreciate authenticity over unattainable ideals, which is refreshing. However, there’s also a risk that trends can spread rapidly, leading to fleeting fads that might pressure individuals to conform to new standards. Ultimately, the influence of social media could encourage individuals to embrace their uniqueness while also fostering a more holistic view of beauty that transcends traditional boundaries.
What can people do to develop a wider appreciation for different kinds of beauty?
To cultivate a broader appreciation for diverse forms of beauty, individuals can start by actively seeking out different cultural experiences. Engaging with art, music, and literature from various backgrounds not only broadens one’s perspective but also fosters a deeper understanding of what beauty can mean in different contexts. Additionally, participating in community events or festivals that celebrate diversity can be incredibly enriching, as they allow people to immerse themselves in different traditions and values. Moreover, it’s essential to practice an open-minded attitude; instead of judging what is unfamiliar, embracing it can lead to surprising discoveries. Finally, sharing these experiences through discussions or social media can inspire others to explore and appreciate beauty in its myriad forms. By taking these steps, individuals can truly enrich their lives and contribute to a more inclusive worldview.
