Speaking test #853
Part 1 · Interview
4 to 5 minutes. The examiner asks about you and familiar topics.
Can you tell me your full name?
Where are you from?
Do you work or are you a student?
How often do you take the bus?
Well, I'm pretty reliant on public transportation in general, so I take the bus fairly regularly. I'd say I probably catch a bus at least a few times a week.
When was the first time you took a taxi?
I think the first time I took a taxi was when I was visiting a new city and didn't quite know my way around. It was definitely a convenient option in that situation.
What are the advantages of taking a taxi compared with buses?
Well, taxis offer a bit more convenience, as you can usually flag them down on the street or book one in advance. They also offer a more direct route to your destination, as opposed to buses which may have multiple stops along the way. Additionally, taxis can be a good option for shorter trips or when you're in a hurry.
Is it convenient to take the bus/taxi in your city?
I would say that public transportation in my city is quite convenient overall. The buses run frequently and have a good coverage area, so it's easy to get around by bus. Taxis are also readily available, so it's never too difficult to catch a ride.
Do you like sweets? [Why/ Why not?
?] I absolutely adore sweets! There's just something so satisfying about indulging in a tasty treat every now and then. Plus, they make me feel happy and bring back fond memories of my childhood.
Have you made desserts or cakes before? [Why/ Why not?
?] Yes, I have definitely dabbled in the world of desserts and cakes before. I find the process of creating something sweet and delicious to be incredibly therapeutic and relaxing. Plus, it's always a treat to be able to share my creations with others and see the joy it brings them.
Do people usually have desserts after dinner? [Why/ Why not?
?] It really depends on the culture and personal preferences of the individuals involved. In some cases, it's a common practice to have a small dessert after a meal to round out the dining experience. However, others may opt for a more savory option or simply skip dessert altogether.
Are desserts considered healthy in your country (India)? [Why/ Why not?
?] It's a bit of a mixed bag when it comes to the perception of desserts in India. While some people may view them as an indulgence that should be enjoyed in moderation, others may not consider them to be particularly healthy due to their high sugar and calorie content. That being said, there are certainly healthier options available, such as fruit-based desserts or those made with natural sweeteners.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.

Who surprised you
My parents and siblings, along with some close friends, organized the virtual gathering. What makes surprising happy events different from surprising disappointing ones?
Unexpected events that bring happiness often have a way of catching us off guard and creating a profound sense of joy. For instance, receiving an unanticipated compliment or running into an old friend can instantly elevate our mood and create lasting memories. These moments tend to be fleeting yet impactful, as they remind us of the beauty of spontaneity and the serendipitous nature of life. On the other hand, unexpected events that lead to disappointment can feel particularly jarring, as they disrupt our expectations and plans. For example, learning that a much-anticipated event has been canceled can leave us feeling disheartened and frustrated. These moments often linger in our minds, leading to a sense of loss or regret, which is why they can be harder to shake off. Ultimately, while both types of events can change our emotional landscape, the joyful surprises tend to uplift us, while disappointments can weigh us down.
How much do you think surprises, good or bad, affect a person's emotional health?
Surprises can have a profound impact on a person's emotional well-being, and the effects can vary widely depending on the nature of the surprise. Positive surprises, like unexpected gifts or good news, can trigger a rush of happiness and significantly boost one's mood. On the flip side, negative surprises, such as sudden job loss or bad news, can lead to feelings of anxiety and distress. Ultimately, the extent of their impact often hinges on an individual's resilience and coping mechanisms. It's fascinating how our emotional responses can be so deeply influenced by unforeseen events, shaping our perspectives and even our relationships with others.
How can a happy surprise be important in someone's life experiences?
A happy surprise can truly be a game-changer in someone's life experiences. For instance, when you unexpectedly receive a thoughtful gift or hear good news, it can instantly lift your spirits and create a sense of joy that lingers long after the moment has passed. These delightful surprises often serve as reminders of the beauty in life and can enhance our overall happiness. Moreover, they can strengthen relationships, as sharing these moments with loved ones tends to foster deeper connections. Ultimately, happy surprises inject a dose of spontaneity into our routine lives, encouraging us to embrace the unexpected with open arms.
Why do you think people usually value surprises more than things they plan?
I believe people often cherish surprises more than planned events because surprises bring an element of spontaneity that can make experiences feel more authentic and memorable. When something unexpected happens, it often evokes a genuine emotional response that can be both thrilling and delightful. On the other hand, planned events, while enjoyable, can sometimes feel a bit predictable or even mundane. The anticipation of a surprise can also heighten our senses, making us more aware of the moment and creating lasting memories. Ultimately, it’s that rush of excitement and the sense of the unknown that often makes surprises so special to us.
How might society change if people had more happy surprises every day?
If people experienced more happy surprises in their daily lives, I believe we would witness a remarkable shift in societal dynamics. Firstly, a surge in positive emotions could lead to enhanced interpersonal relationships, as individuals would be more inclined to connect and share their happiness with others. This sense of community could foster a more supportive environment, reducing feelings of isolation and loneliness. Additionally, an increase in joy might encourage people to adopt a more optimistic outlook on life, which can be incredibly beneficial for mental health. Ultimately, these happy surprises could instill a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the little things, creating a society that values joy and connection over materialistic pursuits.
What ways can people use to make happier surprises for themselves and others?
Creating joyful surprises is such a delightful concept! Individuals can employ a variety of methods to sprinkle a little magic into their lives and the lives of others. One effective approach is to plan spontaneous outings or activities, like a surprise picnic in the park or an unexpected movie night, which can really boost morale. Additionally, leaving thoughtful notes or small gifts for friends and family can make their day and foster a sense of connection. Engaging in random acts of kindness, such as buying a coffee for a stranger or volunteering, can also create a ripple effect of joy. Ultimately, it’s all about embracing creativity and being attuned to the moments that can transform the ordinary into something extraordinary!
