The pie diagrams illustrate the proportion of internet sales across different retail sectors in New Zealand in the years 2003 and 2013.
A broad evaluation of both charts reveals a significant shift in online sales distribution over the decade. While some sectors experienced a growth in their share of online sales, others saw a decline.
In 2003, the largest share of online sales was held by the travel sector at 40%, followed by film/music at 28%. The remaining third was divided between books (18%) and clothes (14%). A decade later, in 2013, the travel sector still dominated, but its share had decreased to 30%. The film/music sector also saw a drop to 22%.
In contrast, the shares of the book and clothing sectors increased over the ten-year period. The book sector's share rose to 35%, making it the second-largest sector in 2013. The clothing sector also experienced growth, doubling its share to 28%. This shows a clear increase in the diversity of online retail sales in New Zealand over the period.
