The bar chart illustrates the gender distribution of research students across six different fields of study at an American university in 2011.
It is immediately apparent that males were the majority in three of the six subjects, while females dominated in the remaining three. Additionally, Computer Science and Engineering were significantly more popular among male students, whereas the majority of the students in Education and Languages were female.
Digging deeper into the details, the number of male students was considerably higher in Computer Science, with over 800 males compared to just under 200 females. A similar trend was seen in Engineering, where the number of males was approximately double that of females. Conversely, in Education and Languages, the number of female students was roughly triple and double the number of male students respectively.
In the remaining two subjects, Medicine and Business, the gender distribution was more balanced. In Medicine, the number of males was slightly higher, while in Business, there were marginally more female students. However, in both subjects, the gender difference was minimal compared to the other four subjects.
