The table illustrates the percentage of various family types in Australia who were living in poverty in 1999.
At a glance, it is evident that single parents with one child and couples with three children were the most affected by poverty, while couples with no children were the least affected. Furthermore, the incidence of poverty was higher in families with children compared to those without.
Delving into the details, single parents with one child and couples with three children had the highest poverty rates, at 21.5% and 19.3% respectively. This was significantly higher than the rates for couples with one or two children, which stood at 12.4% and 13.5%.
On the other end of the spectrum, couples without children had the lowest poverty rate, at a mere 5.1%. This was closely followed by single people and couples with two children, who had poverty rates of 11.4% and 13.5% respectively. It is noteworthy that the presence of children in a family seemed to correlate with a higher incidence of poverty.
