The bar chart provides information about the projected global illiteracy rates in different regions, with a specific focus on gender differences, for the year 2000.
At a glance, it is evident that the illiteracy rates were generally higher in Africa and South Asia, with women being more illiterate than men in every region. Conversely, developed countries had the lowest illiteracy rates.
Looking more closely, Africa had the highest illiteracy rates, with over half of the female population and almost half of the male population being illiterate. South Asia followed closely, with just under half of both genders being illiterate. In contrast, the developed countries had the lowest rates, with less than 5% of both genders being illiterate.
In the Arab States and Latin America/Caribbean, the rates were significantly lower than in Africa and South Asia, but still higher than in developed countries. The gender disparity was also less pronounced in these regions, with the illiteracy rates for men and women being relatively close to each other.
